How is business with you?

It seems to be very slow.

I'm pretty busy at the moment. But I can't get staff, recruitment in London is very tough at present.

I’m seeing that too with some of our salons.
What are you finding the toughest part? Supply of good staff?

No replies to vacancy ads ? ! Which is bizarre to say the least. The barber two doors up the street has given up looking for anyone to hire, there is another salon near by with just one member of staff. Huge shortage in London at present, it's just too expensive to rent here now.

Hi,
I am in south Florida, Miami Beach - Hollywood area. Although it is a prime location in general and is always a hot spot for tourist from all over the nation and the world, since last summer has been very slow, got better with winter but not as good as last year.

I’m seeing that the more junior staff are in and out fairly regularly as usual. But the more senior ones are either staying put in the salon they’re in or leaving to chase the self employment route with the hope of paying less tax. Either way, it’s looking harder to recruit and salons need to think of more ways to hold on to their good stylists.

@sarah hairer

Just a few thoughts;

How are you wording your adverts?
Does it sound exciting and appealing or a maybe a bit ordinary and dull?

I used to draft my own recruitment adverts years ago when I worked for a large organisation rather than get HR to do it, as HR just used standard templates that attracted sub standard candidates (!!). I always got lots of good quality applicants and was able to recruit excellent staff.

Try to make the role sound interesting (do you specialise in Bridal/Prom hair for instance?) and focus on the benefits of working for your salon, extra holiday entitlement, better wages, regular staff training, discounted or free services, high quality products, staff socials, etc.

Sorry, I meant it to say that it worked for me back then, but it was a different industry and a few years ago but the basic ideas might help you when thinking about how to pitch a recruitment advert.

This is likely to be from the virus.

I’m immunocompromised so I’ve had to limit all all my interactions to only my household family and clients coming to my home for treatments. This will be said for most immunocompromised people who also like to have treatments. A lot of mine have cancer, are having chemo or have conditions that make them susceptible so they can’t do as much as usual in close contact or crowds.

I’ve just moved to a new location, all I can say is thank goodness I did, because I’d have really struggled with the number of clients I had before I moved in terms of worrying about losing money when I close for my health. I’ve been severely anxious for the last two months, to a point i’ve lost someone very close to me and instead of grieving all I can think about is how the hell I can avoid the funeral because of the droplets in the air in the crematorium. I have stopped going to
supermarkets and out anywhere and am cancelling all social events.

I am wearing masks as usual but now my clients are also wearing them. This week I think will be my last week as some clients work in high risk areas like airports and I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown from the anxiety of having one visitor. Even with cleaning and disinfecting the beauty room and all areas of contact before and after every guest.

I am sure I will not be the only person dealing with this at the moment. My husbands work has been having regular virus meeting and has had plans in place for some time. They’ve now sent them to work from home so they don’t give it to each other.

Pity we don’t have that luxury! I already work from home but I mean at this point I don’t care if I don’t make any money for a few weeks or months.

I caught a respiratory disease from a client last year and was unable to breathe properly for 6 months because she was well aware and didn’t mention it until after having a manicure so I certainly don’t want another disease.
