Shortcuts has taken the guesswork out of target-setting and business management with the launch of its latest addition, Scorecard. Part of Shortcuts’ S.M.A.R.T. system, Scorecard is a powerful new tool that allows salons to benchmark their business against other, similar-sized businesses in the industry using up-to-the-minute information.

Scorecard is completely anonymous and gives incredible insight into what a salon owner can expect of his or her business by comparing its performance with that of other salons or spas. It also tracks various areas of the business – such as client retention, retail sales and client satisfaction – comparing current results month-on-month or year-on-year. It is part of the S.M.A.R.T. system, a range of powerful products for salon businesses, accessed via any web-enabled device.

“With 13,000 clients around the world, Shortcuts has the largest community of salons in the industry,” said Tom Bentley-Taylor, CEO of Shortcuts UK and Europe. “With Scorecard, our clients can see how the average salon or spa is doing against important business metrics, like retention, as well as checking key indicators of whether they are doing better or worse than they did last month or the same time last year.”

Those using Scorecard can compare service and retail sales, client statistics such as weeks between visits and retention rates, booking values and more with those from other businesses to see where they are and where they could improve. Salon business data is confidentially compiled online to provide meaningful data that a busy owner can use to make decisions quickly.

“Technology companies in other industries, like Google, have created similar systems to help their clients understand their performance and benchmark themselves in a similar way,” said Tom. “When it’s compared with figures from other firms, your business data suddenly has more meaning and it’s much clearer what areas could use some work or where you excel compared to others.”

Shortcuts Scorecard has been tested in markets internationally, and has already thrown up some interesting facts about the industry.

For example, following a 100-site pilot carried out in Australia last year, a monthly summary across all salons showed a general decrease in retail sales for the early part of 2011 and an increase in the value of discounts given. Shortcuts provided the businesses involved with this highly valuable information. Armed with this they worked to discount less and add value in other ways. As a result the value of discounts dropped but total revenue increased.
