Hi, I am qualified in L&P, Nail Art & Hollywood Toes and I am slowly building up a good client base. I was given a referral last week and the lady came to see me today. Her nails are very long and very thick and look lovely but when I started to do the consultaton I noticed that she had a line down the length of her nail which on closer inspection turns out to be a very fine split in the nail. I checked all the other nails and it occurs on one other. She wanted me to do an acrylic or gel overlay but I said that I did not think it was advisable because of the condition of her nails. I explained that I thought it could be caused by several things ie, medication, age, trauma to the nail etc. So to cut a very long story short she wants me to look into the type of treatments she could have. I thought she might be best off with just a manicure. I would normally use sparitual products but I have not been trained in all of the different products such as nail boost, resurfacer etc. Can anybody give me some advice, did I do the right thing? thanks.

It could be furrows or onychorrexis which is associated with furrows (?).
I was reading about this the other day...and I can't think where
I have a toe nail that is split in half thats why I was looking....and my mum told me my Grandma had this problem...so I thought I would start seeing what it was about...

anyway....it could be caused by damage or it could be congenital if I'm right.... but either way the nail could be thin so it needs a bit more care....but you can overlay it, just make sure there is no infection or redness.....anything that looks not quite right.
The overlay might help in the long run by preventing any further damage....

Just be careful, don't file too much!

If it is permanent the fault will be in the matrix....so the overlay will only help but not stop the furrows from re-occurring.

Now if any of that is wrong please correct me....I had to try and remember it from memory....Where did I get the info from? I've got brain mush....

Thanks for your advice. I have a nail book full of information but as usual the bit I need is not listed!

I take it you are talking about a split in the natural nail?

This is often due to damage to the matrix as if permanent damage has occurred in the matrix and a small section is injured then the nail plate cannot thicken, thus showing the split.

You can enhance these nails though.

hth:)

Just to add a simple blow or trauma can cause this too, before you worry your client, but a simple consultation will clear this up.
