Hi guys,

Wondering if any one can help me.

I want to do my nails today using bio gels overlays.

I wanted to do the ruby slipper ( red/glitter French tips).

However I haven't got my nail glitters ( there at work an I have a few days off :) )

I have found some fine glitter for making cards e.t.c. Do you fellow geeks think it will be ok to mix gel with this glitter or will it make the product lift ?

Any advice would be greatly apprecciated.

Many thanks guys
Xxx

It wont make the product lift, but you might find the colour bleeds. Try it and see.

with gel i have found that the colour is much less likely to bleed than if you use l/p acrylic with craft glitter. in fact i have never had a problem and i have a lot of glitters.
like fiona says, try a little and see.

ive been using edable art glitter from a cake shop and ive had it on for months now with no problems.
the only way you'll know is to try it and see.
good luck and we'd love to see some pics when your finished.x

so can you use any kinds of glitter then in nail art? You dont have to buy it specifically made for nails??
I wondered this the other day cos i was sorting one of my nail bags out and found a pot of glitter to use on eyes....I havent eve opened it! and thought it would look great on nails...but wasnt sure if i could use it...but surely glitter is glitter ?

I have always used childrens craft glitter on my nails. I mix 2 parts clear acrylic with one part glitter and have never had a problem with lifting etc. The only thing I had to do was keep a separate brush and dappen dish purely for the glitter mixes as a couple of times I found a rogue bit of glitter making its way into my pink and whites!

any good glitter will mix just make sure the colour does not bleed and its fine

Can I just ask how you get the glitter to go where you want on the nail, e.g. if you want to do glitter tips, I only use glitter gel at the moment, but this seems like a great idea and would be far cheaper than buying all the individual glitter gels

Thanks v.much xx

Everyone seems to do it different, but I usually add my glitter after the first cure, with a brush I apply it to the part of the nail I want the glitter to be. Then go over with anothr coat of builder gel (I have a clear builder I just use for glitter). cure, and carry on as usual. x

Hi guys

Thank you all your replies, they were all very helpful.

I didn't even think about colour bleeding so I practised on a tip first.
The effect I wanted was a red/glitter French so I mixed (alot) of red glitter with a clear gel, which bleed abit but I didn't mind. I then tried mixing red glitter and a rainbow glitter with red gel and this looks great!

I am having probs uploading pics at mo but watch this space.

I'm also looking for cake shops for the edible glitter so thanks for that tip.

Thanks ever so much, will give it a go this weekend, I never thought of that xxx

When you add glitter to gel it is supended in the mix and will set that way, when you add glitter to l&p it becomes part of the chemical reaction and is seen as a foreign body so you need to ensure you have the correct ratio of glitter to powder. You can use any glitter tho some colours are just dyed and will rub off if you file on them.
Have fun and show us your pics!

When using 2 parts acrylic and 1 part glitter how do you know how much you need in total to do a full set, i.e how big would you make each part?

Thanks

I use craft glitter dust or fine glitter with soak off gel or buff off gel and it works really well.

The only thing I would point out is not to make the nails too think and need filing down because some glitter when buffed loses its colour.

I have a lovely sapphire blue that when buffed becomes silver and you end up with a two tone nail lol.

I make it up in small batches as I go along, that way I don't end up with a lot of waste. Sometimes doing one set of nails I have mixed the ratio 3 or 4 times. Having said that, any left over mixture I keep for another set. I found someone on ebay selling old 35mm photograph film cartridge containers. These are perfect of storing the mixes. I label each one to save opening several pots looking for the correct colour!

I agree, there is a risk of the tips becoming too thick. Shop around, you should be able to find very fine glitter and as with most things it is just practice. I have not done many of these sets but with everyone I can see an improvement on the last

I've never tried it this way as was taught the other method, how do you make sure you have enough product touching? Do you ever get pocket lifting doing it this way? It would be a lot easier then pre-mixing!
