Hi there!

I am new to this and have thought about starting my own business a number of times only to decide I am too scared to do it!

I would love my own shop but financially I don't think I could cover start-up costs as well as high rent etc. There is a room (two rooms if I want) available for rent in a local hairdressers, is renting a room profitable or not? I have also discussed going into business with a friend/colleague but again I'm unsure if we could cover costs with two of us.

I know I would need to work hard to spread the salon name etc but my real concern is money. With a mortgage to pay it's very daunting, I'm sure lots of you ladies have been in the same boat or are at the moment and can give me some advice!

Thanks so much in advance!!!

Some make more than they would from a job, some don't. It depends on lots of different factors. For example, how big a clientele you can bring, how many hours you can put in and what the demand/competition is.

and on top of all those factors what your overheads are

hi there, do you have a client base already? If not can you afford not to earn much while you try to build your clientele base and still pay your rent ect.
If yes then go for it what have you got to loose xx

I'm in the same boat. I curently work as an Administrator and the money is ok. It pays my bills, but I really want to leave for various reasons.

I've done a few clients here and there but I don't really have a client base.

I'm looking to rent a room also and I'm worried if I will earn enough money to pay all of my bills.

I think some salons can guarantee a client base and guarantee that you will get at least minimum wage. Is that enough? Not quite enough for me yet.

What to do?

Sorry chick but i find it hard to understand how a salon could guarantee you a client base unless you are employed by them and it is there clients you are carrying out treatments on.
In most cases when you rent a room it is down to you to build up your own client base which takes a long time. So if you are hoping to leave a full time job and be able to support yourself from an income right away when you don't have many clients yet this could be a real struggle.
Could you not wait and save up until you are able to support yourself financially while you build up your client base. Or maybe go part time so you are guaranteed an income until you get enough regular clients.

hello.. im the same my friend has a salon she has just opened and has a room perfect at the back for me! im a single mum on income support so going self imployed i know nothing about, and need to finish college before i think of taking it , allthough she will keep it for me!,as all i can offer at the moment is manicure and pedicures,,im doing nail art now and acrylics, going to do a fake bake corse and ear peircig too:Grope: i sudgested putting a poster up saying if there was a nail bar availibul to the clients she has for hair would they be interested i using it..no names just tick below to get a rough idea how popular it woudl be!! i have a few clients i know would use it... but like :rolleyes:you have said its if you can afford the risk. xxx

that looks really cool..im doing this a college in the nex coulple of weeks but going o follow this and give it a o tomorrow... feel really excited now. lol. x:eek::rolleyes:

I did this 2 and a half years ago, rented a room in my friends hair salon, so a ot of the existing hair clients were there ready and waiting.

I have had to sit down there for 4hours in between clients, but those client have turned into regular ones who now book a ot of differnt treatmens.

You have to be prepared to do this, and promote like mad. Quiet times ARE hard but make use of the time to plan promotions throghout the year - Mother's Day, Easter etc.

What you have to think about, money wise is that your over heads will be low and this will enable you to make as much money as potentially possible. Owning a salon, which is what aim to do at some point, will eat up a lot of money, and you have to think about what money you need to take before you can pay yourself - Staff, overheads, products etc.

Stick with it, i you truley believe you can give it your all
