The important things in life don't cost money like a loving partner/family/good friends and then again we live in a very materialistic world where we are judged on what we have. I myself have a good life and feel privileged for this but when I look back many years ago as a child I had such happy memories with so little. I wasn't poor but we just got by and the memories I have didn't cost.
I guess there is poor where the bills are met and little else and poverty where there is extreme hardship. In today's world could you be poor and happy?

Personally No. Not a chance could I be poor and happy..I couldn't tell you what there would be to be happy about.....

You will notice most people who have little or no money will always tell you. ..'money doesn't buy you happiness' I disagree. ..money can buy private healthcare, good food, relaxing holidays, lovely presents, nice houses, cars, and money can do a lot of good for charities and the like. .

I'm sure I'll have a list of geeks telling me it can't buy a family or friends or happiness. .. well in that case I'd buy some private counselling sessions and take medication to make me happy as this seems to be the norm these days!...

You may get this thread locked very quickly as it is a very awkward subject to agree on... but you asked the question and I replied in the most honest way possible for me.

In short, yes. I'm poor and I'm really happy. I'd rather have money than not have money, and being poor makes me more ambitious to be successful...Id be happier with more money! Being poor brings stresses and having money brings opportunity but I am very happy in my life right now-it doesn't mean I'm content to stay as I am and I'm still aiming for success, but just because I am poor it doesn't mean I'm unhappy x

I don't think money makes you happy but being comfortable knowing you can pay the mortgage, bills and put food on the table makes life a lot less stressful I would imagine.

I think people with a lot of money develop greedy attitudes and feel superior to others not as wealthy.

Good Evening Virtues!
I must be psychic. I thought you might be the first to reply and I'm not being provocative in any way! On this occasion I do agree with you on things like the luxuries you mention, charities etc but I also believe that there are the people out there that aren't money driven and who can be happy with little. As I mentioned earlier some of my happiest memories cost nothing and are priceless.

It's subjective, poor to one person is not poor to another. I am not poor neither am I rich, I am not particularly ecstatic and loving life but I do not feel the stresses that poor people face.

I don't think that money is everything although it does make life that bit easier!

Not in business! Simple :)

It's a grey area, unbeknowns to me my mum and stepdad struggled financially big time when I was a child, but all I have is happy memories, I had the things I needed and occasional treats, we went on camping holidays which were amazing(had a few abroad holidays before my parents broke up) my point being is you can be happy and not so well off, if you have the love of people around you, fast forward to now and I'm earning very well for my age, and I have the same amount of happiness as I did then, I do definitely agree though that you are more happy knowing you can pay bills ect... Xxx

Depends in what 'poor' is to people. For me poor - homeless.
So no in that case. Some people claim to be poor but they aren't if you have a roof over your head you are not poor. A lot of people struggle to get by but I think we could all ask ourselves: 'could I do more?' If I couldn't afford to feed my children I would seriously get another job etc to support them or move to a more affordable home/a cheaper area etc...there are always options.

Although 'money doesn't bring you happiness but I'd rather be sad in my ferrari.' Lol

And a very good evening to you Tonicj....I have been snooping around here for a few days now I know... probably irritating most geeks I come across. . ..I'm sure you're getting to know me a little by now! I will always be outspoken generally saying things that most people only think but that is me. ..I am one of the nicest and most helpful people you could meet and anyone that knows me personally will say the same. .. (Here's hoping!). .. do you know anything about waxing? :)

This is very true. ..you move in the social circles and classes depending on wealth.... I'd love to be on the"housewives of Beverley Hills" friends list rather than socialising with the people in the program "skint".... !

Welcome back Virtues

I'm interested in the "thinking" side of people and as this thread is related to money I can't help noticing that you are very money driven. Can I ask what made you so driven? (If you don't mind sharing)

This post pretty much sums up where I sit on this topic! I'm poor (ish) I'm happy but I could be happier! If had more money- but that's what drives me to do better! Likewise, I have been richer financially yet more miserable in general!

Hi virtues!!!!

Getting interesting.... Have you guys continued your debate elsewhere?! I feel left out 😜😜😜

I wish I was more money driven to be honest lol! I just can't be..... Although I would love to be very rich and secretly fantasise that I'm destined to be!

It depends what you class as poor, as in homeless? Or the fact bills are paid yet you have nothing left?

I'm rich the first week of payday then poor for the next 3 ;)

But no, poor as in struggling to pay bills etc, I'm a financial advisor and debt collector (I'm nice - honest!) and none of my clients are happy as such. They're struggling everyday can't afford to put food on the table trying not to loose their house, but the majority of people I speak to live waaaaay beyond their means. 'I can't afford my mortgage but I have a 50inch TV on my wall and eat out at nandos every week, I'm not willing to downsize or apply for assistance as I'm too proud' this is what I hear everyday. People that are generally struggling I bend over backwards to help! And I mean I literally fight for them. So in my eyes no your not really happy as you've got this constant worry about bills etc but people try their best to be happy. You just get the odd idiot that doesn't really care and are actually not poor just plead poverty and so up to their eye balls in debt but trying to live a high life they can't afford.

But my hair extension clients are more then happy ;) xxx

My boyfriend is my inspiration, he's a really successful entrepreneur, he owns numerous companies and is well respected in his field, all at the age of 22, and he is at his happiest when he's working and making money! So if he had none, he would be unhappy. That said, I have a theory that it's the thrill of making money and working tirelessly towards something that does it for him, rather than having the money at the end of it...

I think the beauty industry in General is a low paid industry and I knew this before I started but I was in a better paid job which I hated, now I'm earning less and love what I do, so I'm slightly poorer but very very happy :D x

I have this argument with my boyfriend all the time !
He calls me spoiled, a brat, materialistic etc and says money can't buy happiness and I thrive on money ...

I wouldn't say I'm spoiled per sae but I also didn't do without- again this all depends on people's views on spoiled, I know a few girls my age (22) that still get mummy and daddy to pay for everything - including cars and BOOB jobs !! Whereas I've always paid my own car, my phone bill since I was 17 etc.
And then there is the bf.. I think he's spoiled at home as he gets everything done for him, doesn't cook, clean - his own bedroom included, etc. Whereas my brother and I have always had to do housework and have a job since we were 16 so we knew what the real world was like and how to take care of ourselves.. But because he didn't have his mum buying him things or giving him money and going on all the holidays I've been on etc he calls me spoiled ? .

I also would hope that no one actually thinks I'm a brat and he only says this to annoy me ... Yes I get annoyed sometimes if I don't get my own way and go in moods etc but don't we all?? I've never asked him for anything or my parents matter of fact - I get spoiled at Christmas still and get everything I ask for but does that make me a spoiled brat ?

I personally like materialistic things but I am not a materialistic girl if that makes sense ? I am also always skint aha it doesn't stop me spending though :-s.

I personally think money can't buy you happiness and love BUT it makes life easier therefore making you happier ..

Let's face it homeless people, people up to their eyeballs in debt etc .. Are they happy?, no.

But you also get celebs that have loads of money and still can't find happiness.. For example Heath Ledger - good actor, child etc and still committed suicide ..

I've always thought there is no right or wrong answer to this and writing this strengthens my views on it..
