We have just found out my dad's 10 year old dog has a slipped disc and will need an MRI and surgery. My dad can't afford this and neither can we because he's not insured :-( my grandmother has been looking after him for a while as my dad is in and out of hospital atm. He has 2 weeks of pain medication but after this I think he will have to be put to sleep because the surgery can't be paid for [emoji22] I feel so bad!

Have you tried RSPCA? I know someone who couldn't afford vet bills for an injury when there for their dog and they sorted it out for much less money, she was out of work tho so think this was perhaps a reason they did that.

I know this isn't helpful to say but looking after an animal is a big responsibility and insurance is essential otherwise it isn't fair on the pet

Yes I totally agree, I think if you can't afford pet insurance you shouldn't have a pet. I spoke to my dad about this many times but he still didn't do anything about it and now he is going to pay the price :-( my dad doesn't work as he is disabled in a wheelchair so doesn't get a lot of money x

Yes definitely, I know how you feel because I've spoken to my dad about it before too. I have a dog and he's never been without insurance especially because he has allergies and needs treatment now and then, vets are very expensive :(
If he's disabled and gets income support or anything then definitely ring RSPCA and have a look around on the web because I know there are charities that help people keep there pets when they need treatment they can't afford x

I'm sorry to hear the dogs poorly! My boyfriends mum is disabled and gets help from the rspca for her dog, it's definitely worth a try! Will keep my fingers crossed for you all. L x

My parents got help from the pdsa in the past so definately contact them ASAP. It isn't free, they do request a donation towards treatment.
Unfortunately it's the poor dog that may pay the price ;(

Another vote for the PDSA. My dads a disabled pensioner & is eligable for help with them.

Xx

Do you have BlueCross Vets in the UK? It is a charity that offers vet care for animals when their owner cannot afford to? Might be worth a google.

Yes we do I have posted the link above :)

If your dad is on benefits then he would be eligible for the pdsa , I would contact them straight away , you just give a donation of what you can afford x

What kind of dog is it ?
Does the dog have any other health concerns at the age of 10years old.
You need to be realistic , if you taking an older pet of a large breed dog the life span is not that much longer then 12, seriously speaking the aesthetic given to older pets usually in my experience: and happens within 3 to 6 months if not immediately creates stress on the animals body and they usually can pass away from the anesthesia .

Spinal operations unless done at a specialist facility such as Davies near Leighton area or where it specializes I wouldn't let anyone or a regular local vet do a spinal operation on my pet.
The other alternative is to contact the varsity for vet college and ask them if they able to help out. My cousin works there , they do offer free treatments to special cases for study purposes.

The thing one needs to look at your pets recovery and if your father is wheelchair bound , will your pet he able to get the help or care needed, post operatively?

I have seen some cases where the owners have used alternative methods to help and the dogs have come right, without surgery. These include being on a long term anti flam Med, and massage therapy on the spine and using a gel which used for horses , which can be bought at a vet or pet supply shop and a lot of humans use it too for pain relief.
Or consult an animal Physio or acupuncture or pet ciro , they do exist in the U.K. And have had a lot of success, personally I would go this route for my own pet if I was in your situation, as I am not a fan of old pets going under anesthesia .

Also diet : do not let your pets become fat, walking down a flight of stairs if they over weight or jumping off the couch at a wrong angle can easily slip their disc out for example in small dogs like daschunds .

Good luck and pray for your pets recovery. X

He isn't a very healthy dog to be honest. He hasn't had any yearly boosters etc or been to a vet until recently. He's an overweight staffy cross King Charles cavalier. He has a bad cough which the vet wants to do X-rays etc but again my dad can't afford to have this done. My grandmother had been taking care of him for the last year as my dad hasn't been very well, I registered him with a vet and wanted to start getting him back to health but unfortunately it looks like it's too late now. I personally feel like putting him through the surgery and recovery would be too much for him but I feel terrible if I don't at least try to get some help x

I have spoken to the pdsa and unfortunately they cannot help with the amount of money it is going to cost x

Oh shame I am sorry to hear that. I think a "cough" is usually symptoms of a heart complaint which is particularly common in the King Charles spaniels as they get older.
They cough to increase oxygen to get into their lungs and pump the blood it's like they not even aware but it can be maintained easily. However with everything else happening I think perhaps you need to hunk carefully and pray about it. To make sure whatever decision you make it will be best suited for the pet and family.
