Can't work out how to use extractor fan built into table

A local salon was giving away manicure tables today and I picked one up. I'm newly qualified and completely baffled by its built in extractor fan. The back of the fan opens on to a cupboard with a black vent on the opposite side and nothing connecting them. Any idea what's missing? I've attached a couple of pics to show what I mean.
