Hey Geeks, I'm in need of some unbiased advice...

My current full time job isn't beauty. I'm fast falling out of love with it due to a list of reasons, including but not limited to:
Not being paid for breaks I don't get
Not being paid for early starts or late finishes
Being injured through staff member negligence (no repercussions for the staff member concerned) on more than one occasion
Being refused first aid on said occasions
Being bullied by a senior member of staff and then the grievance procedures not being followed

It goes on.

Anyway... I have been job hunting a while now and had a couple of interviews for teaching posts related to my current job. I've also been applying for beauty and spa jobs however these are going nowhere due to all my recent experience being about my current job.

There's only so many ways I can make it relevant - public facing, data protection, health and safety etc. I have 2 years of salon experience but it was several years ago.

I am qualified in a range of treatments but I completed all my training separately - I don't hold a full level 3 qualification.

If you were hiring, would that be a deal breaker? Can I say something in my covering letter to help me here?

Any advice appreciated, all my friends and family are split between "report it", " stick with it" and "get out" with no follow up. I need a plan, I can't afford to not work but I can't stay where I am

Look I stayed in a bad place for over 2 years and ended up stressing myself out. I should have left that place ages ago.
Don't do something you hate. And don't feel like you're stuck. But be smart about it. Maybe you should finish your level 3.

In Australia we don't get paid for lunch breaks. But nothing else should slide. Go with your gut.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm job hunting at the moment but as I don't hold a full level 3 I'm not getting very far.

I can't pay my bills from renting a chair as I have no client base at the moment :(

What a horrible situation to be in! You need to get out of there asap.

Not having a level 3 yet isn't the end of the world, and certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

State in your covering letter aims, goals, aspirations ETC, really sell yourself. Then get yourself dressed up and walk in to salons and show em what your made of.

Good luck and please keep us updated. X

Talk to a salon owner about a percentage. Then if you don't have clients you aren't missing out. But when you get busier the salon owner will be getting a nice percentage too. X

I'll reply in total honesty. If you have level 3 you are far more employable than having bits. But - big but - it would depend which elements of level 3 you do have.

As we're talking beauty, I'd want the following
Mani, pedi, facials, waxing, eye treatments, massage and electrical facials.

If you have nearly all of that, adding any missing bits shouldn't be too costly. For example, if you put in an application saying that you would be happy to fill any necessary gaps in your training, I would be impressed with your commitment. If you then did well at interview, I would be prepared to wait while you trained. Things like an electrical facial qualification can be done over about 2 days for around £400. Not cheap I know, but a means to an end.

I don't think that there's any doubt that you need to leave.

Good luck x
