Hi lovely hair geeks! Just jumping over to see if you could offer some advice?

My girlfriend has a 13 yo daughter with shoulder length Caribbean hair. It's been very difficult to manage (extremely afro) so together they have been thinking of doing something along the lines of straightening (chemically) so the daughter can manage it on her own. Till now she's mostly worn it plaited/braided. Neither are keen on pin straight hair or high amounts of chemicals. Can anyone offer some advice on what options she has and the longevity of these options? Many thanks! X

Nothing will be done in a professional. Salon until she is 16

Oh ok but she's in aus, not sure if that is the same as the uk or not? Can anyone give me any advice? Thanks

Hey , there are salons that specialise in Afro caribbean hair and will be able to give you the best possible advice, you could maybe start a thread on here for salons that specialise in this field or even on google ? I lived in Australia for two years , mainly in Brisbane and I can't think of any specialists off the top of my head , however I'm more than sure there will be somebody who can help you .

Hi a relaxer would be too strong I would use a texturiser which is chemicals but not as harsh and will just loosen up hairs texture making it easier to manage however some people would disagree with putting. Chemicals in young girls hair but if it's looked after properly with conditioning treatments and steams will be fine, the only problem is I don't know if they sell them in aus I have a. Friend in aus and she couldn't get her hands on one so asked me. To send her over one.

Thanks for your advice. Have trouble finding someone specialising in Afro Caribbean hair. The texturiser sounds good. Any recommendadtions on brands so I could narrow my search for her? Thanks again x

Hello, she can relax or texturise her hair but one a professional would have to do, I have had clients who want to cut corners and do it themselves, with dissastrous result, but have no fear, I had to say that so you understand what may happen, however I know you are in Australia and finding it difficult to find a salon specialising in afro hair, as prettynailsrock said above pephaps getting one sent to you from eiether the UK OR US, there are so many branded kits for texturising in the market, I can't give a specific brand, but google it and when you do get one, once textusised as also said above give the hair good conditioning treatment and steam once every 4-6 weeks, wash the hair once in every 7 or 10 days, moisturise moisturise moisturise with a leave in conditioner every other day. Use shampoo if you can't find one for afro hair, buy any brand from a reputable hair dressing salon that specifies shampoo and conditioner for dry/damaged/coloured hair.
Hope this helps, or I could come over and do it for her, all expenses paid, lol !

ok so i have afro hair and i have used relaxers till my hair melted as a result i cut it all off and let it regrow. then i started looking into more gentler products i found something called "stratt" it helps soften the hair without killing the curls making it more manageable less tangly. however i don't know if they sell it in aus.
and before anyone says anything yes i am a hairdresser so i do know what i'm talking about.
as for aftercare she needs to look for a moisturizing shampoo that has no alcohol in its compounds. and deep moisturizing conditioners. she also needs to find a moisturizing cream combination that works for her. if she is lost for recipies here is one: - 2tbs coconut oil. 1tbs cooking oil(very rich in moisture), 1tsp olive oil, 2tbs snake oil (could find it on the internet), and 1tbs beeswax. she could fragrance with a few drops of essential oil. this is to be used after every wash of the hair and then the hair to be tided/wrapped up in 4section buns and wrapped with a scarf and left to dry naturally overnight.

this is only due to the age of the girl so please don't go offering this to clients in salons hehe... youtube also has a range of afro hair styling techniques that she could try.

I hope this helps. gdluckxx

I think Prettynailsrock meant the brand 'Just For Me' make the product too..??

Thanks so very much everyone for your advice! I'll check all your recommendations out and put the options to her. She maybe happy to wait so as not to damage her daughters hair. I understand she's young but she's desperate for independance in this department, which at 13 is understandable. I think she's keen to avoid DIY kits if she can, Better left to the pros! You've given some great options, thanks agin :) x
