I've had someone book in for a Pedicure next week. She is 4 months pregnant and has also requested if I can give her a hand massage on it's own, not a full manicure, as she is suffering with carpal tunnel and it's really sore for her.

She is going on holiday and by all accounts is flying and said she has heard it can get worse from the air pressure. Although I'm not sure having a massage beforehand will help with that

I have to admit this is the strangest request I've had yet and I obviously don't have a separate price for providing just a hand massage, it's usually just part of my manicure service.

So firstly, is this something I can do for her? I don't know much about carpal tunnel treatment and obviously don't want to make it worse in any way.
And if it is something I can do for her, would you charge or just do it FOC seeing as she's already having another treatment? Would I just do a massage as I would on others or special attention given to just the wrist area itself with slow, gentle rotations?

I can't see that massage would cause any issues but maybe just double check what your insurance says to be on the safe side.

i get something similar to that, but i have fibromylgia and get pain in my wrists aswell as pins and needles, whilst holding the phone etc, its basically that, and the massage may just help soothe it. it can be painfull like you know if you have pulled a muscle in your back a nice back massage can sometimes help. obviously it may do nothing, but its always worth a go. Id try it if i thought it could help mine xxx

Any thoughts on how to massage/charging or not charging?

carpel tunnel is basically a condition that that causes pain, numbness, tingling and lack of sensation to part of the hand/wrist. -imagine when you hand goes numb after not moving it for ages and you try and use it and cant do anything! - its like that all the time but very painful!

i cant imagine a massage having any long term effects, but im sure for the short term it will feel heavenly for her! it will also help any swelling she may be suffering with.

If it was me i wouldnt charge - for the sake of a ten min massage, its a nice jesture esp if she is a regular clinet (and if shes not, those little things will make her one! :D)

She's a new client but I already said/thought I wouldn't charge her for that exact reason, it's no hardship to do it for her but just thought I'd check and see other's thoughts on it and if it would be ok to do for her.

She said she didn't want a manicure because she goes somewhere else to get her nails done, so just wanted the hand massage that I state on my website that I give as part of the treatment.

Ok, so I'll just do my usual gentle massage, just don't want to hurt her if it's painful! Thanks for the replies

You could do the hand massage while feet are soaking or in booties, then it won't take you any longer :) as its a lovely gesture maybe she will start coming a regular client for her nails as well xx

Fingers crossed! :)

Don't worry to much about hurting her , as the external pressure is unlikely to add to it! It's a very strange sensation to have and I'm sure she will love the massage! Show her your stuff and get her coming back for more!!! Let us know how you get on. X

I hope this doesn't sound harsh, but the best thing to do would refer her to someone who specialises in remedial massage or has done a proper pregancy massage course (not one of the one day courses). Failing that a physio will be able to help her. Carpal tunnel is common during pregnancy as the extra fluid can cause pressure on the median nerve. However, there could be a pre existing condition which has been aggravated during the pregnancy. Massage can indeed help, and while the carpal tunnel is typically the site of the problem, it could be caused by nerve entrapment anywhere between the neck and the hand.

By all means offer her a soothing hand massage, but do explain that you would need to refer her for a beneficial treatment. Typically reducing tension in the wrist flexors and muscles of the forearm are helpful but I would avoid rotations or mobilisation unless you know what you are doing because they can aggravate the condition.

Let her know your not a therapist and can not offer treatment for carpal tunnel. But as a manicurist you can offer a nice hand massage with your service. She needs professional help to deal with a medical issue. You wont hurt her with your hand massage and it may feel better for her for a bit, but it wont fix her either. No reason not to manicure and polish, you might get a new regular client! :)

If she is not a vegetarian, massage her gently with Emu Oil, it does wonders for carpel tunnel arthritis .... google it

Thank you for all your advice. I have already explained to her that she may require proper medical referral for suitable massage going forward but that I would be happy to give her hands a massage for temporary relief during her appointment. She's obviously suffering to ask me, it's no hardship to do that for her.

Nailzoo, I will have a look but she is due tomorrow so no time to order anything in especially but I will read up on it and maybe I can advise her about it and it's benefits. Thank you :)

I had symptoms of carpal tunnel and all i wanted was my hands to be massaged.... even though it is nerve pain used to give great relief for a little while. x
