Evening all!

I have been researching thoroughly what route to take to get started on my training (NVQ, ITEC, CIDESCO etc) and have stumbled on the champneys college L2 ITEC Beauty Specialist treatments course.

The hours work well for me and I can afford it, I just wondered if anyone else had trained there and could give me any feedback or if anyone had any views on this training. I Understand Champneys is a leading well known brand but I want to be sure I’m spending my money on the best possible training as I’m self funding as a mature student.
Thank you!

Champneys have a great brand name and I’m sure a qualification from them carries a great deal of cachet. However I would comment that I did a similar course which also included level 3 facial electrics (a real must if you are serious about working professionally). That course was 3 days a week, 9:30-5:30 for 8 months. Nearly 3 times as many training days.

included in the course was a mandatory 10 week stint working in a Spa, halfway through the course, unpaid. I was rather startled to find that we didn’t get even minimum wage, and that we were fully booked, back to back. I confidently expected to receive tips. Nada. I think I got £10 altogether.

Looking back with the perspective of an employee and salon owner, that work experience was the making of me. On completion I was still remedial at waxing, nervous and confused in electrical facials and stressed during nail treatments but I knew where I had to improve and I still had another 4 months of lessons to hone my technique and ask questions. I put myself on Groupon for waxing practise before my exams and I also arranged separate master brow training, lash lifting and branded facial training and I learned to thread. The tutors were all delighted to model for me and asked me lots of questions. I learnt lots from them in return.

I also started working in my own business and became so busy I had to defer my exams.

So my observation is that you’re paying around £100 a day to learn hands on skills without much opportunity to practise. On the up side, you can carry on working as usual. As long as you understand you’ll still need to work very hard to find people to model for you and you’ll also need to set up a fully equipped beauty room with everything you need to carry out treatments, you’ll be fine. You’ll benefit from a mentor and there will be plenty of support here as well to help you. (I offer business mentoring but I don’t mentor students.)

I know some people who graduated from there and are good specialists now. This college’s name is good, and I think you will be fine if you graduate from it. An important note is that a lot depends on you too, not only on the college. They help you learn the base and have a starting point, but it’s up to you what you will do with that. Nobody’s going to help you better than you yourself. The same happened to me after graduating from asa miami college – I knew a lot. However, I still had to build my career and gain lots of practical experience.
