oohhh lets start a chinese recipe page.. yummy yummy.. i still have not found shredded smoked chicken recipe that is easy hheelllppp

i can post simple recipes if you guys want it... but i only do home chinese cooking though.. and like i said before... home chinese cooking is not the stuff that you eat in take aways... it may or may not suit western peoples tastebuds... but on the plus side.. is that you can control what to put in.. and it is more healthy and less artificial....

anyone interested....?

ooh Go on Anna, you can copy and paste the lovely recipes you've given me ... and they are so easy!

I didnt know what you lot were on about MSG? but when sassy said "monosodiumglutamate" I knew exactly.

This is a HUGE problem for my MIL. She gets migranes from it.. really bad.

Other things she cant eat that contain it are Pot Noodle, some types of gravy granuals, most dried food really.

I presume the powdered flavouring what they use at the chinese restaurant is what contains it.

HTH xx

Anna, can I ask are you Chinese? Not many westerners like the 'real' Chinese food mind...

It's a flavour enhancer. I used to get really bad vertigo migraines, I couldn't lift my head off the pillow. In the end I went to see an ENT specialist, had an MRI scan and allsorts of tests. he said that the trigger is usually food. So everytime I had a migraine I had to record what I'd eaten in the past 24 hours, 3 times in a row it was from eating at a Chinese restaurant.

I didnt know MSG was that bad, everytime when I am cooking/eating I must have it, otherwise to me the food is tastless:irked:

Take a look at the link I gave earlier in the thread, I didn't realise how bad it was . When we lived in the Far East my mum used Ajinimoto all the time. Now I won't go any where near it, obviously because I just can't eat it as it upsets my balance, but also because of reading up about it, it is pretty nasty stuff.

MSG used in take aways is white and looks abit like salt.. actually looks very much like salt except if you look carefully... its long instead of round....

the way to tell if they have used a lot is usually after about an hour you have eaten... you get thirsty... and the more thirsty you get means the more MSG they have put in... MSG does add flavour... and is sometimes hidden in some chinese sauces.. but in moderation its ok.. its when they scoop it by the spoonfuls and adding it to EVERY dish you eat which makes it not so good...

some people get headaches.. like sassy.. and some kiddies get hyperactive..

they use it by the buckets in take aways and chinese resturants.. otherwise the food will not have such a rich flavour.. which is the reason why i said chinese home cooking is slighty different... it is healthier but maybe to some western people.. it might be a little bland... but then like i said to sassy before.. you add flavour according to your own personal taste..

i have to admit i do alot of chinese cooking myself at home.. i have hundreds of books and my kids love it.. the food tastes similar to the food you get from the chinese takeaway.. i will pm you a question flower if you dont mind...:)

I started chinese home cooking, and your right it did taste bland.. so we added soy sauce.. much different.. but I am wondering now if the soy sauce itself contains msg..
off to check! lol

[edit]
well if it was it would have to be in the ingredients list surely and I cant see it.. so thats a good thing I hope! LOL

some chinese sauces do have MSG.. but in moderation its ok... its when they add it in spoonfuls in some take aways that makes it no good... (and yes... they do add it in spoonfuls... like you will add salt in spoonfuls)

soy sauce is an essential ingredient in chinese cooking.... usually in replace of salt cos it is already salty...

maybe i should start a thread on chinese cooking....? where i can explain ingredients and their usage...? where i can leave home chinese cooking recipes for my fellow geeks now and again to try...?

Did you know most stock cubes unless organic also contain mono sodium glutomate and no i would never give a 1 year old takeaway chinese.

well I'm a bad mum ...... Oscar eats anything !!!!! and I cook him all sorts of food (great cook book by Annabel Carmel) BUT we do eat out alot and take him with us where ever we go, and he loves Chinese food and Italian, i thought by giving him lots of different flavours he would develop a better palate !! I guess everything is OK if you don't over do it xx I think its just great when kids enjoy there food xx
