Hi everyone!
I have a client that is in the process of being diagnosed with FND (functional neurological disorder). She wants to be booked in for a facial but unsure if I should go ahead as having a little read about it, some people find that it helps to be massaged & relaxed whilst it will bring symptoms on in others.
She has been having seizures of sorts where she zones out & paralysis but this generally happens before she gets out of a bed in the morning.
I think I probably know the answer, that I shouldn’t do a facial & it’s pretty useless asking insurers as they usually say refer to your training but had never heard of it before & don’t think a lot is known about it.
Has anyone come across this condition with a client before?
Poor lady has so many health problems, ME & fibromyalgia it would be lovely to pamper her. I have massaged her before but not since she has been having these symptoms.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would ask your client to check with her consultant/specialist/GP who is her care provider for her diagnosis and treatment. Like you said insurers always say refer to your training when training only covers the most common contra-indicators and cannot possibly cover every single possible medical condition. I personally wouldn't provide a facial until she has checked if her care provider has any concerns.

Thankyou, I totally agree.

Hi, I actually work in corporate insurance and currently re-training in beauty. Unfortunately in these instances Insurers cannot advise you what to do as they too have no medical knowledge. However in this instance where its a medical contra-indication outside the ones you have been trained in, they would ask you refer her back to her GP for confirmation.
Hope that's of use.

I'd ask for written confirmation from her GP/health professional that it's ok to proceed and to specify if there's anything to avoid/do differently, incase of any triggers. I'd also ask her to bring a carer to the appointment incase she needs help or for any emergency (I'm sure this wouldn't happen). Lastly, I'd probs schedule her maybe at the end of the day, or just b4 lunch, just incase she does freeze in some way and you can let her rest, without worrying ur next client is outside waiting.

Thanks everyone, she is checking with her specialist/gp & already asked to see if there is anything to be aware of or avoid. I’m mobile so it’s a home visit & she lives with her parents so someone will be around. Fingers crossed.

Sorry.....never heard of it. Please let us know what you do find out though, as it's always good to learn more.

Will do. It’s a strange condition, & pretty scary too I would imagine.

As some one who has FND and was diagnosed 2 years ago... Functional Neurological Disorder- is where the messages that are sent from your brain get scrambled and this produces a wide range of symptoms. For me I present with a stroke, so I have left sided weakness, slurred speech and poor memory. I basically can't walk or talk properly. While you have these symptoms an MRI will not show typical brain damage as it would have if I had had a stroke. Unfortunately I have since had a stroke 😕 . You would be fine to do a massage/treatment as there is evidence to show these things can even improve symptoms.
For those of you that haven't heard of it, there are various websites to give details. Several groups are campaigning for more help with this issue as thousands of people are diagnosed each year and we do not get the help that is required.
Sorry for the long post xxx

So sorry to hear you are going through this GlitterPink, must be awful but I really appreciate you taking the time to tell us a bit more.
I did look at a few websites to get some details & I’m sure it would be fine to go ahead with a facial too just need to go through the proper channels for insurance.
It’s funny you should say about not getting the proper care, she was discussing with me today that she felt the specialists were almost mocking her in a way. I know quite a few people with neurological conditions & it is such a broad field & like you mentioned, a lot of these conditions will not show on scans or mri’s.
Good luck x

Thank you hun. If it will help your client, there are several FB groups that are available - fnd dimensions is a self help group, we are split into areas and meet up or just recently have zoom meetings. There is also FND hope which is good too. Xx
