I can see how this would be annoying, I have this on going situation with my sons teacher, every time I come in she has a look at my nails, she told me she got a shellac kit, I didn't say that it couldn't actually be a real kit, then last week she said oh I might come get mine done so I can see how u do it, I just kind of ignored it because I felt like saying I am a professional! I have invested my money and time in professional products and training! But the way I see it is we all have unique styles and talent so even if another person uses the same products no two manicure are going to be the same, I specialise in nail art so I know no one else can do exactly what I do. But I definitely don't share everything that I have researched, learnt, practiced over and over because if someone wants to do it as good as me then they will have to spend lots of time learning like I did.

It is so common and annoying but have confidence in what u do and don't share your knowledge.

I'd say, " Thank you, I'll be happy to do your nails but the training will be £100.00 extra." With clients like this no wonder some keep things in unmarked bottles!!

I understand that many a nail tech began their career as a DIY'er. I did.

I didn't leave my nail tech of 11 years because she lacked professionalism, skill or customer service. She was freaking amazing! My life became too hectic and I needed to be able to do my nails on my own schedule, not hers.

When I embarked on my new path as a DIY'er, it NEVER crossed my mind to contact my nail tech to ask her professional advice. I would never try to steal her professional knowledge. And this is what this is...theft of professional knowledge. Would you call a plumber for free step by step instructions on how to install a tub?

Be a DIY'er. I'm totally cool with it. Totally. However, I'm a professional and I'm not going to share my finely honed skills or my knowledge with you. I'm not a freakin' charity.

You're a DIY'er and I'm not giving you any of my PROFESSIONAL anything. Why would you need my knowledge anyway? You're a DIY'er, not a pro. If you need to know something about nails, Youtube it.

It dose happen everywhere, which is really sad. As people don't relise how much harm it can make. What about all nail disorders and ilness, damage itp. I always say you get a set of unprofessional nails and the infection is extra free.
I did post on my FB pages a wee coment with a picture of salon french nails done by myself compared to unproffessional ones.
That the post: ;)

My point is, Be careful of your nail ladies:

I don't let the diy'ers bother me as I know before long they will be looking for a professional job, as they get despondent with what they do.

I'm not worried about these people as they aren't the ones I want as clients anyways. There will always be a higher class (money and attitude) looking for professional quality that don't have the time to do their nails themselves or care to. I have a client that told me she comes for the company and good conversation more than anything anyways and why not get a nice set of nails to go along with it.

I find it hilarious that clients think they can do nails without proper education or guidance.

One of my spray tan girls has brought a l&p kit off eBay from Hong Kong, lets just say I couldn't help but laugh at the nails she produced and put all over Facebook, they were yellow, lumpy and more tip then nail bed. What gets me is she had people asking her to do their nails.

Just leave them b, they will get bored, I can't wait for the people she has done to go back with infections and lifting nails.

I had to post this!

I posted earlier about a colleague who was give shellac supposedly by her husband for Xmas.

She done her nails by herself came to show me I didn't comment!

Now she's booked in with me tomorrow night to get shellac done, I'm preparing myself because I know it's going to be question after question on how to do this, or how to do that.

I put a thread a while agin about client purchasing her own Gelish kit etc she has now sent me a picture of her French
And also saying her daughter very pleased as she done hers aswell
Now texted me asking about things on my price list wonder if she going to start up

i had this not to long ago when i did my mates girlfriend...she keeped asking my questions when i was doing her nails, then when she went home she text me saying iv order this and iv orderd that...think im going to start doing my own,it doesnt look that hard...i wanted to scream! lol then proceded to text me asking what else she needed and how to apply etc...so fort i would be funny and go into 'nail' mode and use words she wouldnt understand. after that i didnt get a reply LOL

One of my favorite clients told me (via text) that she purchased Gelish with a little lamp and bits n bobs from eBay.

I know it was bound to happen sooner or later, but.....*sigh*....I feel so flat :(

Do you know, when you really think about it ... how many of us have done the same thing .. bought waxing kits to do our own waxing, bought mini casi-type machines rather than pay for the treatment ... hair colouring etc etc ... and we always go back to the professionals because in the end they do it quicker, cleaner, easier, with less fuss and mess and better and we are left with cupboards full of boxes of things we never use. Dont be down about it .. they'll be back. In the end we all go back. x

That's very true Geeg :)

Yes very true. One dodgy dye job and one painful attempt at a self-bikini wax were enough to send me running back to the pros!! haha

I understand where u all are coming from but around here everyone seems to help I brought it up one day after my trainer got off phone after giving advice, but her example was if your in a rut and need advice on fixing our vehicle the mechanics will give free advice and I no that's true as my husband is a mechanic spent lots of money in college but like he said sometimes its good to be knowledgeable. Mind u I think I would be bothered as I mean all this training and practicing and so on but I do feel my trainer is right in a way, but I definitely think the Rogers shouldn't charge others as they haven't had the proper training!

I know it's been said before. But just don't worry. Ok so you may have lost that client to a DIY job but you'll pick up other clients. As for other clients choosing to go DIY I find it very few and far between. I moved from one area to another 30 mins down the road and took 9 months maternity in-between(I had twins!) Quite a few of my clients chose the proper training route like mrsmac on pg 1 and only one is doing well. All the others have given up or do a bit here and there. So even with training it's doesn't make you successful. You need passion. Without it these people will have wasted the small amount of time and money that they did invest!
Remain professional, keep you head held high and industry secrets to yourself!

I had one of my best friends say she would just buy her own uv light & colours to do her nails herself when I told her I couldn't do them for free anymore, I only wanted her to give me enough to cover the cost of the stock etc but she was less than pleased! To add insult to injury she then asked if she could borrow my Sally's card so she could buy her stuff & also when is VAT free day!!! Needless to say I said no, she still gets her nails done occasionally & pays half price but its all a bit awkward. S x

A couple of people have asked me about being a nail tech and I've been happy to pass them on information about training and how to go about it. I can't understand though how doing your own would be cost effective though unless you only wanted to have the option of one or two colours. What's the point in buying in all the kit with the lamp etc if you have to pay near enough the price of a treatment to buy in a colour you may not even like it will go out of fashion before you have even used it up!

Umm... As a non-pro with aspirations and determination to become a pro, I would like to chime in.

I can see why you are miffed. It was very tacky of her to ask about prices and what not but I wouldn't worry about it. She will find out there is a big difference between doing your own nails vs someone else'. She may not realize how much start up supplies cost. I have been doing my own manis for several years and I still have spent a small chunk on training materials. Proper materials don't come cheap! And I wouldn't even consider trying to do something other than a simple paint and art job on someone. Too many things can go wrong.

Unfortunately while the economy is on a downward spiral you are going to getting more DIY nail treatments .In other words people looking for a cheap fix!
It is sad i know but think of the pride that comes after you have fixed the mess was the created from diy
