Iv been off work a year due to cancer treatment I’m starting college in September doing level 2 beauty therapy and nails I want to charge a small fee for my time and equipment for eg £5 will I need to declare this and will it effect benefits etc? How does it work please ?

We can't know how your benefits are calculated, you need to contact HMRC to discuss your plans. In simple terms charging someone for services is earnings as such will be subject to tax requirements, but (I'm not on benefits so know know the details) I believe there are some 'allowances' but whether you are entitled or not is not something we can help with.

Contact your local citizens advice or local authority equivalent. They should have a benefits specialist who can advise you properly. Some colleges will have a specialist student money adviser but it depends on the college.
Best of luck.

Yes you need to declare any earnings. You are allowed to make a certain amount before it effects your benefits. Contact your local benefit office and they will be able to inform you xx
