Hi all, over the years i've been on Salon geek i've noticed threads getting very heated when concerning colour correction. I personally have many years experience in straight forward colouring , foils etc. but when it comes to a serious colour correction job i.e. from black to blonde or red to blonde etc. I really do think its a job for someone specifically trained in this area. discuss....................

just to say - i'd rather pass the work on to someone with relevant experience than risk damaging a clients hair with potentially dangerous chemicals

I can't express how much fear a few threads have gave me for clients safety on here in the past two days.

thanks for answering, Do you specialize in colour correction 4andi? what brands do you use?

I do colour correction and I use igora and matrix, but I would nev go out of my depth with it, I'd rather loose the client.

We do so many colour corrections in our salon. I cant even tell you how many people think its possible to just "pop" a colour on and "hey presto" - Hairdressers indluded.
ALL my staff recieve specialist colour correction training outside of the salon so we can make sure we really know our beans and no one is walking out with kahki, orange or broken hair!
If I'm honest, I dont massively enjoy doing them personally. I think its the telling the client how miracles cant be performed and how much its going to cost them! I charge alot for them, due to the amount of work, expertise and product that goes in to them
xxx

The salon I work in also does lots of them in comparison to the place I used to work,I think it's word of mouth. The salon my sister in law works in wont even touch one.

I recently went as a client for a number of consultations as i wasnt getting very confident answers. I had been blue black for 17 years and wanted to eventually go red - the responses i got from specialists was shocking, 1 even told me to strip my own hair and 'see what happened'.

In the end i did it myself but even part trained as i am, its quite a daunting task and one i really shouldnt have undertaken on my own - good job it went well really (never would have tried it myself had i wanted to go blonde though).

I absolutely agree!
I've only just started frequenting sg again after about 6 months break over the Xmas period etc,
And I'm shocked at how much it's changed!
It seems to be full of students who really do seem to be fearless
This forum used to be for professionals, it's now more like a training forum,
I think others feel the same, as I'd met 2 friends on here, very experienced hairdressers, and they don't come on here anymore for the same reason

yes, alot of our colour correction is through word of mouth. You fix someones "BlondeMe" disaster, or a home bleach and you become the local "go to" for fix its!
I still feel sick when a client walks in with broken orange hair.....I know what they want before they ask.... A MIRACLE!
Would help if it were illegal to sell these highly dangerous chemicals to any Tom, Dick and Harry too
xx

Yes, of course it's a specialist area.

That's why it's taught at level 4 and not level 2. Once you get past the basics, it becomes more of an exact science rather than an art.

Unfortunately, there are some level 2 trained hairdressers who haven't undertaken any further colour training and THINK they understand colour enough to undertake colour correction work when they clearly do not.

The lack of good basic colour knowledge that a couple of people on my level 3 course displayed was quite shocking and you wonder how they could have passed their level 2. :-(

I do the ones other hairdressers won't do. I've seen some shockers in my time.
Yes to the op, it is specialised work PLUS you need the right stuff to do it. I couldn't just race to a wholesalers and buy one tube at a time to have a stab at it. I use lots of mix tones, pure pigments, and several different ranges. I use Redken colour plus some l'Oreal too, but mainly Redken as the different ranges available are so versatile.

I agree there are some threads that are terrifying, but after all that's happened and been said, I don't want to be the one to contradict anyone.
There are enough top hairdressers on here without me butting in.

I had a trainee blatantly argue with me over the use of bleach that I as a professional for years used to manufacturers guidelines and it went wrong on me and they were trying to advise someone else to use it against my advise! What does this say to any student in training? What respect do they have for their mentors on the shop floor or their clients in the chair. It just down right scares me. Hair is science not cockiness?

I am not very confident in doing massive colour corrections so I don't really do them, it scares me lol x

Don't be afraid!
You build up on the basics.

I only learnt proper colour correction from my last salon I work in, in Australia, we were a matrix salon and the education they provided was just wonderful!
Lots of training days, theory and practical.

Never promise the client the earth, I've done it in the past and learnt from it... Be honest, Take test cuttings, and take your time :) x x

At least you know not too. I've corrected a correction before.

I have learnt a lot from salon geek! I always used to promise it will come out how they wanted to but don't anymore lol I make sure they know it will take time x

I have done colour corrections in salons I've worked in over the years but would not take them on now I'm freelance.
I would refer them to a couple of reputable salons.
I used to be a bit nervous (and excited:)) looking at how colours were going at the basin. I just couldn't possibly do this in someone's house! It would be too nerve wrecking on my own.
Also, I wouldn't have a massive amount of colours in my case, just what I use and need regularly.
Nope, not for me:) although my sister who is red was saying she might like a change soon so I may be tempted;) but that's different. (And I would only do it for her if I had it worked out to a t)

I really enjoy colour correction especially when another salon has f**** up! You must understand the sience of colour and it takes lots of knowledge and experience. I always take strand tests, I would NEVER just go in with bleach or stripper!!!!

I love colour corrections but hate doing them out of salon..

You really need your whole stock room!!

And jeez clients just don't get we have a tint brush not a magic wand
