Hi peeps

Bit of a strange one this..... I absolutely love doing nails and am still learning loads with it. However I am also really keen on being a personal trainer and it's a career I originally thought of years ago. Thing is, I want to do both but would I be able to juggle the two?

Does anyone else combine nails / beauty with another career? How do you manage it?

x

I do nails one day or 2 a week, and otherwise manage my nail art dept, and my training... does it count?
what do you fear?

I just worry I won't be able to fit it all in, and that because my time would be divided between 2 things I wouldn't be able to give 100% to each. But I'm interested in both careers so much and don't want to have to choose between them.

What is your end goal?? Where does your passion really lie?6

If you want a career and a reputation as being an absolute expert at what you do, then in my opinion you have to focus on one or the other.

Part time commitment gives part time results.

I think that everybody is different and we all have different capabilities...I have a friend who has two children...a 1 year old and a 3 year old AND she works full-time... and god knows how she fits in 2 or 3 sessions at the gym each week as well! I for one don't know how she does it...but she does, and because she wants to. And she gives 100% to both her job AND her children.

I do believe that if you really want to do something you will do it. Like I say...we are all different and only you know your own capabilities..so only you can answer if you can do both or not..so long as you take a realistic approach.

Doing something 'part-time' does not mean part-time results imo...'quality not quantity' springs to mind.

hi

well i have a story for you ...yawn i know... i had had my own salon for 5 year and worked actively in it.. i decided i wanted to teach also so after i did my training i tried to split my time to do both... i can not stand not giving 100% to everything i do it really gets me down .. call it an OCD maybe..... in order to try to give 100% to both i ran myself ragged.. i was at the college at 5.30 am marking papers ( as i was a part time tutor) i took the papers and books home at night but needed to return them for the following morning so another tutor could sign the books also for their days teaching.. i did not have time to stay at the college and do this as i still had clients.... now lets not forget what industry we are in we cannot have our clients work around our schedules we need to fit into thiers... so anyway long story cut short.. i found that i had no personal time at all and my relationship was suffering so i had to decide what i wanted most and it had to be being a salon owner and working there full time..

If i had continued with this erratic life i would have let my clients down, my staff, the staff/salon progression as i could not focus correctly as i did not have the time... also i would have let my students down as again i would not have held my focus for the individual needs that they had and most importantly i would have let me down and the high standards i set myself......

So in my opinion it has to be one or the other.... sorry hun...

This may not help you right now as i understand yours is slightly a different situation but please just bear it in mind.

That is a fallacy, you can maybe keep it up a while but something will suffer in the end.

Hi, I do nails and also domestic cleaning selfemployed part time.I went self employed in December last year..thank god I took on some private cleans otherwise I probly would of ended up right in debt if I started a nail biz up alone.

The way I see it my cleaning is my main earner..its a guaranteed wage each week..my nails is not guaranteed work..and one week I might have a couple of bookings..the other none.I also like to combine the two,as I couldnt do either all the time ,cleaning is hard work, but I get so much appreciation and thanks from my customers..and thats what makes me enjoy..I enjoy doing nails and Im glad my biz is starting to pick up at last but I just couldnt stand sitting on my butt each day.I think having two different types of job is good ,I take Tuesdays and Fridays off to do do nails..but unfortunatly peeps are after Saturday and evening appointments..but if I have a Tuesday appointment I think urr I gotta work tomorrow, but when its a set of nails I think different.:)

The thing is I like about the two of them is Im mobile I can please my self what hours I want to do and I can see how the other half live..I worked in shop work previously for 20 years,12 years of that stuck in the same shop..behind the same walls for 12 years ..Id never go down that road again.

Go for it Id say variety is the spice of life as they say,and you wont get bored of either Im sure.

I am worried Im gonna get greedy at some point sometimes I just wish there was another day to the week.

thanks for all your replies geeks, it's good to get different opinions x

Pmsl you won't win xAnnaBannAx  Geeg is the quote queen,in fact she used to do quote of the week .... where did that go ? lol

I've read all the above and here's my bit for what its worth ......

I too sat and looked the same 4 walls for 11 years working in Finance!! I was paid well so I stuck it out and when I had my son they were very obliging and gave me the hours I wanted. But my heart wasnt in it and I stopped caring about my job.

I did a 12month night school course on mans & peds with the intention of occupying my mind but found I loved it so much I was doing friends and fam before I knew it. Several people encouraged me to go mobile, which after a faltering start I did.

My son is now 7, I changed my day job and work 9-3pm mon to fri as an Estate Agent and do mobile nails when it fits. Im surprised at how well its going and have had no complaints from EITHER my day job or clients. Im not aiming for the sky, to do this would be foolish and yes, there would not be enough days in the week etc ... but I've managed to hit a happy medium and provide my clients both in the estate agency and my nail clients with my 100% dedication !!!

Go for it, if you think you can manage it, why not !!

Hope hat helps Noodles.

Thanks Julia, that's really encouraging. I mean the personal training thing is a long long way off anyway, but if it did all pan out I'd maybe try and do that twice a week and nails 3 times a week. It's good to hear it works out for people!

Ur yes I replied.Working in shop work for 13 years doing evenings and weekends ,then going part-time due to having my daughter, but still working saturdays and sundays...nowz my time in life I work when I wanna work..untill a client phones and wants an evening appointment and I realise I cant turn them down whilst Im trying to build a client base.:irked: Damn.I should be grateful I dont have to start at @ 6.30am no more sposse..

Clients will only expect things from you if you let them! If they do not have your personal contact details then they cant call you out of hours or expect you to work outside of your advertised hours.

Even if you are mobile you should advertise your available hours, have a seperate business line and have it turned onto answer machine out of hours.

Holding down 2 careers (in my opinion) can work if you are extremely organised. I would rent some space, 3 days a week, and have set advertised hours. Clients will have to ring your place of work to make appointments.

Have a set weekly routine and do not deviate from it, even once! Building a client base is hard, but you need to do it on your terms, not your clients. If you start as you mean to go on, clients woun't know any difference.

Be strong, be confident and be very very good at what you do, and you'll be fine!!! lol

What is your end goal??

I think this is the main point and only you can answer that.

How much do you love nails and how far do you want to go with it...?

Will you be happy just being another nail technician who does a few sets of nails each week...? or do you want to progress further into the industry and maybe one day become a educator..? top competition winner..? be well known worldwide for your contribution in the industry... like Gigi...?

Its not a matter of being capable, its how much you can do and how many hours are there in a day.

You can be perfectly capable in juggling a few balls at the same time but one day your arms will eventually ache, all of your balls will come crashing down and then you are left with nothing.

Like everything else in this world, you get back what you put in.
