Hi there, at present I work in a tanning salon. We offer sunbeds, spray tans and have a nail tech. I am considering speaking to the owner about renting a room as I would like to train in semi permanent eyelashes. But I have so many questions and worries I was hoping you could answer some of them for me please xx
My main question is through time could I make a living out of offering only one service to clients because of where I would be based and the other services that are available?
Would you say that most of your business is one off clients or a steady mix of returning clients for maintenance and new clients?
Do you think eyelashes could become as popular as getting your nails done over the next few years?
Hope you guys can help put some light on things for me xx

Definetly! Everything is being specialised too, no longer do people go to the same salon for everything. I wanted to open a wax shop years ago and was talked out of it as putting all my eggs in one basket so to speak. Least to say I am gutted now that I didnt.

Lashes are going to get bigger and bigger. Just riding slowly through the poo economy at the mo and work is slow but steady, just don't expect to be booked yet 100% of the time. Depending on where you are and the clients jobs etc as well as your own marketability you can do really well.

In 12 -18 months I really think the industry is going to boom again as the women that are putting off treatments at the minute start crawling back deshevelled as there finances at home finally start stabilising too.

Go for it as eyes are going to be as popular as spray tans!

When I told my friends I was going to college to learn gel nails they were excited. When I told them I was going to do eyelash extension training they got MEGA MEGA excited.

Eyelashes make such a dramatic difference to your look. Especially if you've got short straight eyelashes like me.

Clients are much more aware of the eyelash extensions that are available now and regularly seek them out,
i have clients that travel from a few towns away to come for their lashes fitting and maintaining,
it is definitely a treatment that is going to boom as soon as the economy turns as it is already popular,
it is also very addictive for the client as it make such a difference to their appearance, it really opens up the eyes, hth

As a MUA, the questions I am most frequently asked about are false lashes. I offer a service doing "going out" makeup on a friday and saturday night and would say that 60% of the girls (and boys) who I see ask for advice about applying lashes, what are the best lashes to use, can I recommend an adhesive, what do I think of semi-permanent lashes etc.

I know nothing about nails so I don't know how big the industry is, but I would definitely recommend going on a course that specialises in lashes- you only have to look in Superdrug to see how big the market has got.

I know a few girls who make a good living just doing eyelash extensions, I have just recently trained with them and have had lots interest already. Lots of my nail clients have been getting extensions for years and wouldnt be without them.

Oh thank you you really have gave me the buzz back in my tummy and I will make a point in speaking to the owner next time he comes in about the pros and cons of renting a room to staff.
As you said things might start off and stay a little slow during the next year or so but if im still working in the salon then all im looking for at the start is enough clients to pay for my rent and stock and hopefully when it gets busier through time I could reduce my hours working in the salon to consantrate on my business.
Do you guys think the owner would be ok with that or not very happy as it would make me less flexible to him?
