Officials at East Midlands Airport say the captured value of counterfeit goods has soared in the past year, with popular items such as fake ghd hair straighteners top of the list in a burgeoning criminal trade.

It’s reported that between April 2008 and March 2009 officials seized goods worth more than £4 million, an increase of £1.6 million in the same period last year.

Part of the haul, which included Jimmy Choo bags and Gillette razors, £117,884 worth of ghds was stopped from entering into the country by The UK Border Agency. Diligent officers at the airport were presented with an award from the national Anti-Counterfeiting Group for their successes in the last year.

“It is hugely reassuring to know that our efforts to end all ghd counterfeit activity is being so effectively supported by the teams at the UK border agency,” a representative from ghd’s brand protection team said. “Every fake ghd styler seized at airports around the country is one less that will end up in the hands of unsuspecting consumers.”
