I thought I'd tweak the last attempt at a custom blend and went a little too far :irked:

Now they look like plastic. I've used a glitter topcoat on one hand and it has taken the 'edge' off the glaringly wrong colour.

I don't want to remove them as my fingers are getting a little sore from practicing now, so am wondering about covering them with polish for the next couple of weeks till they're ready for maintenance.

Any suggestions for toning down the 'plastic' look?

I see what you mean, I am no expert have tried custom blending yet but without filing them I dont see that you have much choice but to polish them. although I agree the glitter polish does take the edge off. Love the red glitter tips great smile line I have to get practicing mine :)

Hi hunny,
I reeeallly wan't to help you with this because I know how much you want to get it spot on,

I have studied the pics,
and I think the main thing giving this mix the "fake look" is that its kind of a solid colour,
The best thing to do is try to blend your zone 2 as flush as possible towards the cuticle area, then use a double dipped bead of your mix and your usual pink, for zone 3 bead,
It gives it a more natural appearence,
When I do mine I also try to make the bead flush towards the sidewalls too, so the area is still nice and thin,
Some of your nails I can see the product is slightly bulky at the sidewalls

Also with nails as long as yours ..(do you have naturally long nail beds ?)
Combined with the mix, I think your smiles would look better deeper.

Although your smiles are VERY neat and consistant on this set....you jammy moo you lol !

You need to get your bottom over to mine one day for a play day :green:

And I think your title needs changing because these certainly are NOT a disaster hun xxxxxxxxx

i see you what you mean about been a bit plastic looking but they do look extremely good!!

Hi
I know you aren't too happy with the 'plastic look' as you put it but I really do like the idea and glitter tips are very well done. The length and position of tips are fine and I'm sure next time you'll have it just right!!!

I don't think they look bad at all....i think you are too hard on yourself...

i agree with angie (bagpuss) i dont think these look as bad as you think they do.
i really am going to have to try this method of yours because your smile lines are just so sharp and crisp they look great.x

i think they look ok tobe honest....i agree with emmsy...i do think that with custom blends i think they look better when zone 3 is done with a sheer powder (may be just my preference), or may be do you zone 3 a bit thinner.... i think they look more natural this way rather than 1 block colour over the whole nail.
I saw your critique yesterday...there did seem to be something quite not right with it.....but i think that this was made worse by the fact you had only one nail done on the hand. These ones dont look to bad at all and think that you are being a bit hard on yourself.
With regard to colour...the one you did yesterday was better...although i did think it looked a bit warm for your skin tone...may be go back to that mix and try cooling it down a tad....i am not an expert in custom blending myself...just getting to grips with it....i feel a course would benefit me more i think...have you thought of doing one yourself??
sorry for commenting on both ur critiques in one...it just seemed easier when explaining what i wanted to say.
i hope it helps

I would love to do a custom blend course. It is always so much easier when someone shows you exactly how to do something. Unfortunately I have limited funds at the moment and paying to go to The Event has cleaned me out for a while  Perhaps I can get a demo there - I can't wait :)

Cheers for the other comments - I have a few pointers now to try again.

I'd love to

Sounds interesting mixing the blend with translucent in zone 3. I would never have thought about this. How do you stop it from being 'marbleized'?

Cheers and thanks for the pm,
Hazel

Just to say I agree with Angie, I'm no expert full stop, but they look pretty good to me, I think you are way to hard on yourself!!!

Also dont forget that you may have the cb colour perfect but when you add any colour to the free edge it will change the colour/look of the cb iykwim.

I also think that using a sheer powder in zone 3 would look nicer .

I have always found when using an opaque powder in zone 3 it is hard to get it to blend nicely to the natural nail without having a slight ridge on the finished nail, i almost always end up filing most of zone 3 off trying to get it to blend nicely ( maybe its just me ) , also imo when it grows out there is a definate colour difference between the opaque colour and the natural nail and it doesnt always look nice. Thats why i use a sheer powder in zone 3 now, so it doesnt notice as much when the nail starts to grow ( if that makes sense !)
Hope what ive said makes sense, but it is late !

You are being waaaay to hard on yourself.

They are a great set of nails, with kick ass smiles to die for!

Yes, the colour is pale, however, I prefer the nails without the polish on. Have you tried putting a gloss over the top, as this can also change the colour too.
Great idea about zone 3, I will deffo give that a go next cb I do. My last one had a distinct line around the edge of zone 3 and it did not look right to me.

I am NO expect on these at all... i am stilling cutting my teeth.... but my first thought was...... they only look plastic becuase of the colour of the free edge... if you were to use a darker (less pink/red) tone that would tone down the pink plastic look ....
smiles are loverly and length is great...
just my thoughts
Mel

They really don't look that bad babes honest, take up emmsy's offer and go for a practice. x

Never thought of that one - something else to think about thanks :)
Perhaps I should stick to a soft white free edge until I've perfected the colour. Just wondering though, I ruined this blend by adding a little too much red so colour should I add to tone it down again? yellow? I'd rather not have to waste this batch.

Cheers,
Hazel

according to my geeky notes lol,
Green cuts out the red tone xxx

Well here we go .............

I think you have talent. Nice workmanship !

I think whatever product you used or how you used it (mix?) let your work down.

The CB powder looks very heavy and matte and just not got any depth to it which is what is making them look so plastic and unnatural.

Shall I just point out that there are other opaque powders available that do not look like this when applied by someone who has the talent (as you obviously do). Maybe it's time to move up?

Now there is a complement(from geeg) i would be never proud of.. well done
X mel
