Hey everyone,

I went to Alan Howard's today and wanted a small 'handy size' bottle of Cuticle Oil. I got it for my mum towards her birthday present as she has dry cuticles.

I bought the Star Nail's Cuticle Oil...but then read on the back that its to soften the cuticles and good to moisturize after enhancements have been applied, is it alright to use it daily on natural nails? or should I try to find something different? (Nowhere round here sells Solar Oil!)

Cuticle oil is perfect for rubbing into the natural nail. A bit like applying furniture polish to wood :green: - it keeps them supple and in good condition too. I advise this in particular to clients who have very brittle nails.

Is the one I have bought ok for her nails (the star nail's one)? because she is 62 and her nails split/peel/break very easily but I don't want to give up on trying to keep them looking nice for her.

Can you tell what ingredients are in it as I havent used that one?

I do find cuticle oil great conditioners for the nail anyway - natural or enhanced. (I am a big fan of solar oil).

Parraffinum Liquidum, C126100 - thats all it says on the bottle

This is the research I have found on the ingredients you list:

Liquidum Paraffinum is an exotic sounding way to say mineral oil. Petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging. Used in many products (baby oil is 100% mineral oil!)

Now compare this to the ingredients I know in Solar Oil:

Rice Bran Oil. Rice Bran Oil has a long and successful history in Japan as a base for soaps and skin creams. The oil is purported to reverse the effect of aging by slowing the formation of facial wrinkles thanks to rice bran oil's rich concentration of Vitamin E and gamma-oryzanol. In Japan, women who use rice bran oil on their skin are known as 'rice bran beauties'. In the US, rice oil has gained a strong and loyal following with soap manufacturers and artisans.

Jojoba oil contains many important nutrients, such as vitamin E, B complex vitamins, and the minerals silicon, chromium, copper, and zinc. It also contains a lot of iodine, which may be where jojoba gets its ability to fight against bacterial and fungal infection. In addition to acne, jojoba has traditionally been used to treat canker sores, cold sores, athlete’s foot, and warts.

Sweet Almond Oil. The oil is easily absorbable and serves as a great emollient, by lending a soft glowing beautiful touch to the skin. It balances the moisture in the body. In case of loss of moisture, it helps to restore it. It makes a great lubricant, thus aids in combating itching and inflammation. It is an excellent natural moisturizer that is suitable for all skin types. Owing to the multitude of benefits that Almond oil offers, it is increasingly finding its way in the making of soaps, creams and moisturizers.

After looking at these is try your hardest to try and get some Solar Oil. Look at mail order option if you cant find any near you.

I think you're best off with something that contains jojoba oil, as it has a small molecule that can penetrate the nail plate.

Yes they do chick go to creative its in leigh, on the industrial estate by the cats and dogs home!!!!
If you cant get there Alan howards now stock Nsi products get some nurture oil, but solar oil flys off the shelves people cant get enough of the smell, ive been told it makes you want to eat your fingers :)

yeah the star nails oil is rubbish no quality ingredients in it at all. alan howard do nurture oil now part of the nsi range so go for that its lovely nice colour smells lush and has got good ingredients that include jojoba which is good as the molecules are so tiny they penetrate deeper than any other making way for the other great ingredient of vitamin e this will definatly help dry brittle nails used every day morning and night she'll see a big improvement.x:lol: slightly more expensive but you get what you pay for well worth it.

I am absolutely gutted now, I obviously don't know what I am doing and I bought the wrong stuff. I can't get any more to replace it in time either as its her birthday on sunday  Thanks for all the help though

Dont be gutted Andrea - we are not slating the product at all and it could work out to do the job fine, but we have first hand experience of the solar oil and know what a fab product that is and that it does work.

Most of us know about what we like and what we dont like as we have gone through years of buying the wrong stuff and learning the hard way. It is just one of the ways that many of us learn.
