I was reading a very interesting article this morning about bowel cancer. Where I live is a hot spot for this type of cancer.

I personally believe that bowel health is imperative to overall health.

Most mothers would be extremely concerned for their child's health if they hadn't a daily bowel movement and yet they accept not going for days themselves?!

So I thought it might be a good idea to suggest some goods habits to insure bowel health.

The article I read this morning suggests increased hormones levels like insulin could be a trigger ....

Therefore to insure slow steady insulin levels we should
1.eat good quality protein with each meal because protein takes longer to digest so this will helps keep your blood sugar levels
2. Replace all white foods with brown....for example replace white bread with whole grain, replace white rice with whole grain....for the same reason as above ...because it takes longer to digest it will keep our blood sugar levels on an even keel.
3. Minimise our sugar intake ...again because it will cause massive spikes in blood sugar levels ...

Anyone care to make suggestions..in keeping with a positive thought provoking thread please.

Avoiding processed foods is a good idea as most of the chemicals and preservatives they contain are known to cause cancer.

Water. If we don't drink enough of it no amount of fibre will be effective for a good digestive system. We should look to eat natural foods as much as possible for good health.

Exercise is key to a healthy bowel. It keeps the food and bowels moving...(must take my own advice and get outside)! Combine this with all the advice above and we should all be relatively healthy.

This is a bit random

but I once read an article about someone who was diagnosed with cancer in its early stages

they went off and ate virtually nothing but tomatoes and grapes for the anti-oxidants, when they went back 6 weeks or so later NO SIGN of the cancer

Do you think there's anything in this? (Bit of a sceptic when it comes to magazine articles but then again . . . ?" Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I am mental when it comes to this, your digestion is key to all health. I believe in healing with food, lots of fiber, nuts and seeds, beans and lentils, not baked beans which are full of sugar, chickpeas a good peppermint or digestive tea pukka are my fav, no preservatives or artificial flavours, all cooking from fresh, jars are so expensive and not necessary. I take good bacteria (acidophilus 10 million bacteria or more) but not those yakult drinks which are full of sugar. Eat organic whenever you can, yes it's expensive but is that really the price of your health. Preservatives and pesticides penetrate the skin of fruit lots of water. If you really struggle then sacral abdominal massage works well. Sorry to preach it's a topic I feel strongly about lol :D

I strongly believe food can heal, I was told after my 6th stroke my vision would not return after 5 months it started coming back, I was told my surgery would take months to recover from and I was home within 5 days. I strongly believe it's down to my diet and supplements, I figure if my body isn't messing around trying to remove the preservatives, artificial sweetener and junk it can concentrate on healing me. Also sugar can slow your immune system, so I cut tgat out, natural sweeteners only X

....And a very interesting one. Nikki without any prejudice here do you find you pay more attention to healthy foods as you have suffered illness? I say this because my friend who has many health issues has the same attitude to healthy food as you have, in a good way of course. I tend not to just eat and focus on healthy food. ..I eat everything and anything, processed, chocolate and little exercise etc
but I have never really suffered illness. .. but now reading this back I suppose I'm taking a Croc of **** as any fitness related person would do the same!?

However lesson learnt here as being diagnosed with diverticulitis at 40 proves the point. That is one thing I do have. Aimed at the 80+ ... Not the 40+...from having a poor western diet.

My friend has just been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer and has been given just months to live. She went to India on holiday a few months back and had a massage every day and her specialist has told her that the cancer would have been in her body but the massage had pushed it around the body and made it spread. The docs words not mine.

Sorry to hear that Kim. X

Yes 100% I didn't care about what I was eating until I was ill. I think it made me feel more in control of my body at a time when Dr's we're saying nothing could be done and I felt I needed to do something, now it's ingrained. X

Sorry to hear of your friend, also interesting on the massage to. It makes sense when you think about it. X

I totally believe that the body can do a better job if its not got lots of other crap to deal with.

I am wheat intolerant, and since giving up wheat, I don't have hayfever any more! I think while my body had to use its own antihistamine to fight off the wheat, it couldn't also fight the hayfever at the same time. Now I'm not putting the wheat in, it can sort the hayfever out on its own. Marvellous!

Sorry a bit off topic but you know what i mean.

I don't know what the statistics are for now as compared with, say, 50 years ago. I suppose many went undiagnosed then, and did not have the interventions that we have now.

If we are more prone now then it is a bit of a conundrum in some ways.

Post-war, fruit was much less available and we ate a lot of animal fats. Food variety was limited. Once white bread was introduced it was only "cranks" who ate brown. I guess it was around the 70s when we started to become more health-food conscious.

On the other hand we shopped on a daily basis, so fewer preservatives were used, and far fewer flavour enhancers. We hadn't heard of fast foods, and didn't snack in between meals. People seemed to be far slimmer, children, men and women.

I personally believe that eating lots of veggies is good for you, and I also know that if I have even a small amount of protein for breakfast I don't feel hungry for ages. I don't eat much in the way of white carbs, mainly because I can't tolerate gluten. I do need to lose a stone though, so I'm no angel.

(I can't begin to imagine what it must be like not to go to the loo for days...)

Im gluten intolerant too and feel so much healthier now my body isn't trying to deal with that, I love veggies and lots and kits of tgem. X

But the thing is you need to understand your own body and how it reacts to different food types.

Not everyone has a daily bowel movement, some people are regular at 3-5 days and this can be normal. It's only when things change that you need to look at why these changes are happening.

I strongly believe that the body tells you what it needs through cravings so if I crave crisps, I know that I have to up my salt intake, which I usually do by drinking soup or stock.

I also believe that fruit (and veg) tastes best when it is in season, and from the region that it comes from so why are we eating strawberries at Christmas time? Organic is better, and no additives, please!

You are what you eat.

Nikki, where do you get the acidophilus 10 million bacteria from? I'd like to have this without the sugary drinks that it comes in.
