I'm not sure how best to word my query so bear with me people ;)

I'm fully qualified in fashion and photographic makeup and airbrush makeup: I am level 3 qualified in both and this is the area of makeup that I have worked in throughout my career. I feel proficient and confident in this regard.

However, I have this complex that because I am not trained/qualified in other kinds of makeup (camouflage, media, face and body art...basically the other units in the vtct level 3 makeup artistry qualification) that it makes me less of a makeup artist somehow.

I want to teach evening courses only and think that I would be well suited to teaching fashion and photographic and airbrush makeup but I worry that because I don't do all kinds of makeup that I will somehow be at a disadvantage.

What are your thoughts people? Have you done level 3 fashion and photographic makeup and been happy to stay within this specialism? Or have you perhaps done level 3 fashion and photographic makeup and then felt that you need to do more in order to be able to say that you are fully proficient in every sense of the word?

Hair and bald caps don't interest me at all. Far too physically demanding. Ditto time consuming body art for the same reason. And I've no desire to work in theatre/film/tv. I am interested in camouflage makeup and face painting though because it is relevant to what I already do.

Did you do a full level 3 diploma in makeup artistry? Did you feel it was worth it? Or did you call it a day at just doing a specialist area of makeup only because that's enough for what you want to do?

I did a IHBC in media and theatrical makeup, but I love photographic and fashion makeup. I taught myself but I did do a weekend course in London on photographic makeup. This was quite good but it did show me I knew most of it already. I now teach bridal and photographic makeup, which I love.
I have had girls come in who did level 3 and felt they wasted a year as it wasn't relevant to what they wanted to do plus their techniques were not great.

Thanks for this :) Do you teach in college or private? Did you find your theatrical and media makeup course useful for the fashion and photographic makeup that you do or is it completely different?

I would absolutely go where your heart is. I qualified in all areas of make-up. But Theatre, media, special effects make-up were just never my thing. I always loved the bridal and photographic side of make-up I went on to build a career and specialise in bridal and photographic make-up.

These days, I think people are far more successful in becoming expert in their niche, rather than trying to do everything.

Thanks :)

I love face painting but might do a little course in that rather than a full blown level 3. Especially because body painting is too physically demanding in my health. What are your thoughts?

I did do the full make-up artist diploma, and as I mentioned, I have made a career doing just photographic and bridal make-up. But I am happy doing just bridal and photographic because it's what I am confident at and is what I have become known for.

Are you thinking of adding these courses because you want to teach? Or because you just interested in doing face painting and would like to add it as a service?

Both. I like doing face paints for nights out/festivals etc.

I was thinking of adding other level 3 courses because I want to teach but I'm not sure now because a) I only want to teach v v part time and b) I don't want to work in other areas of makeup. If money wasn't an issue I'd do it all purely out of interest but I need to be more selective than that lol.
