Hello Geeky people, I was hoping somebody might be able to explain something to me....

I did these nails quite sometime ago now they was one of my first few sets I ever did..(explains why they look pants lol) anyway I used natural tips, I cleaned under the free edge first and the tip was placed so it covered her natural smile line.....so does anybody know why is there a dirty funny looking line around the smile line? Does anybody know why this happened? It really peed me off at the time but never got round to asking anyone about it x

Not too sure Anna, was it maybe that you hadn't blended the tips enough, or could it even be an excess of adhesive.

That probably doesn't help but just an idea. :)

Doh, silly me should have mentioned her natural smile line!!!

I'm not sure, but it looks like the natural smile line is showing.

When when you say the tip covered her smile line, did you shorten the nail first? Because if you didn't the free egde will show through when you blend the tips. So its actually only with natural tips that doesn't need blending that you can cover a small free edge (as far as I know)
...
If you are to to do same nails again I would probably either shorten the nail or use Gigis secret mix to cover existing smile line.

HTH

first off....they don't look pants...they are pretty good actually.

second...if the "dirty lines" where not there to start with and have now only appeared after a few weeks i would say its just the natural smile line showing through as the nails have grown out...most natural smile lines look discoloured, especially next to a crisp white one.

Looks like the natural nails smile line that you can see,
you would need to take the white a little further up the nail plate to cover this or preferably use a cover pink to extend the nail bed hth

And no they dont look pants they look very natural and nice.

ok thanx for the nice compliments lol they arent from regrowth they were there straight away cos I can remember thinking 'why is that line there when I have cleaned under the nail' (cos it looked like dirt) and yes I definately took the free edge right down before applying the tips. The lines were just instantly there and they were even more obvious than on that pic x

I wonder if it is where you have got excess adhesive - were they the performance type tips that you did not need to blend or did you use tips that had to be blended in? I reckon they were the none blendable (like cnd performance or the pro-impressions) ones and the darker line is where the adhesive leaked through onto the natural nail when you applied the tip.

Well its certainly possible that I could have used too much adhesive...I cant really remember tbh but as it was one of my first few practice sets then I probably did use too much....but the tips had a well that I blended in...they were the ezflow natural leisure tips, Ive never noticed the line on anyone else ive done, im starting to wonder if I took the nails too short and it was showing the skin colour through!?? Its a mystery lol x

I think what you are seeing and referring to is 'The Onychodermal Band'

In Doug Schoons book 'Nail Structure & Product Chemistry' it is featured on page 13.

" At the point where the bed epithelium passes off the nail bed to become the solehorn, part of this delicate tissue becomes bunched up and squeezed more tightly together into a small zone called The Onychodermal Band.
......look for grayish, glassy looking narrow zone under the nail plate. This protective band of tissue stretches across the entire width of the nail plate bordering the white free edge. It prevents infectious organisms and contaminants from getting underneath. The Onychodermal Band also marks the place where the nail plate detaches from the bed to form the unsupported, free edge."

From Doug Schoons book, not quite word for word - just tried to shorten a bit.

omg bev I see what you mean! Ok I always thought the Onychodermal Band was the posh word for the smile line....I need to read read my Dougy book I think! x

it looks like shadowing to me from where the tips may not have been fully blended in....i have had this problem a few times.
xx

i posted whilst this whilst bev was posing and have just read her post.....was the shadowng visable before you applied the enhancments??

I think Bev is right it makes sense, I remember thinking it looks like the nails dirty underneath...it looked like it was behind the nail rather than on top or under the acrylic. I dont think it was my blending im sure it was all blended in fine.

Ive read Dougs book lots and not only forgot what the onychodermal band was ...ive since thought of it as the smile line, but its not is it, its immediately below the smile line...im looking at my nails now and can just see that band below my smile line...tut...feel stooopid now lol x maybe my aunty has big onychodermal bands! lol x

thanx bev!

My pleasure Anna!

Sometimes, when I've got a french on, after a week, you can see like a darkish 'shadow' along the white L&P smile - this is the OB band peeping.
I remember on my CND Foundation, I asked what this was & my Educator (Nottingham Academy, when there was one) told me that is was the 'OB', but I forgot it's name - as you do, untill I read it in Doug's bible!
