Hi,

I need some advice....

I did a new client 2 weeks ago - a full set of acrylic extensions with the french tips. The nails were great and I went back today to do her infills. When I left they looked fine however she then called me a couple of hours later to say that 7 out of the 10 nails had become discoloured, a kind of yellowy colour, more on the tip than the rest of the nail.

Does anyone know ehy this may be?

I haven't changed my process or brand of products. I put a clear top coat of polish on top but again can't see this being a problem as I do this on clients all the time. I had a client only on Thursday who had acrylic infills and she did not have this problem.
Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Anything that happens that quick is brush contamination ... better get a new one PDQ. Old monomer in the brush will yellow all your white powder and it will show on the tip first.

Thanks I will give that a go - it wasn't white acrylic I used though the client had the actual white plastic tips applied on her first set and today was just an infill over the top.

forget the topcoat, just buff them to a high gloss, topcoat often yellows and is more noticeable on the white tips as it is a better background for discolouration.

As Geeg said any discolouration this quick would be due to your brush, try picking up a bead and wiping it firmly on your brushmat (more than likely it will leave a streak), if this is the case, bin it and get a new brush pronto.

Great thank you! I have since spoken to the client as I suggesteds remove the top coats to see if that solved the issue. At first she said it didn't make a difference but since then she has been back in touch to say she has got most of the yellow colour off with the nail varnish remover - very strange!

I only did a client on Thursday with the same brush and as far as I'm aware there are no problems but perhaps my brush was contamiated since that last appointment.

Sounds to me like the topcoat has gone yellow by being in the sun or she's used a sunbed.

Years ago, when I first started out as a nail tech & before I knew any better, I used to use a super cheap clear top coat nail polish by Constance Carrol, it was like 49p a bottle. Dried in seconds.
One client had her nails done, went out to have a sunbed session & rang me & told me her nails has turned yellow - it came off with nail varnish remover. I chucked the topcoat in the bin.

Thanks - I think I will be doing the same! :)
