Hi geeks!

Hope you’re all well? Im a long time lurker, however I’ve only just recently joined the community to post!

I’m looking for advice (possibly some assurance!) please?

I’ve recently returned to the beauty industry after taking a break for a few years. I’ve always kept my eye on things and did really miss it, so I’ve decided to take a risk and jump straight into it again!

I’ve taken on a room to offer advanced facial treatments in a really well established salon in my local area. It’s a fairly large salon, GF is hair with around 15 chairs, upstairs is 4 beauty rooms (one of which is subdivided as it’s HUGE). Honestly, it’s always packed to the rafters, but I’m struggling to get a look in.

I have leaflets on the GF, as well as on display upstairs and I’ve had a little badge made up showing my name and title. The other beauty girls specialise in their own areas; one does lashes and brows, another does nails, another does lash extensions and aesthetics. They don’t like to overlap treatments which is fair enough and suits me to the ground, as I’m not the biggest fan of these!

I know it’s early days (been going for 4 weeks now), however I really thought given how busy the salon is, it would be a really good place to start building a column. How foolish was I, eh? Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t for one minute expecting I’d get clients flocking to me in their droves, but I thought I’d have a bit more interest!
I post pretty regularly to instagram, I’ve got leaflets out there, I’m currently running a promotion too. I’m just feeling a bit fed up really.

I should mention, I am present on the GF and greet clients that walk through the door for their hair appointments, but as soon as they sit down, they whip their phone out, so I find it incredibly awkward to strike up conversation to get to know them and talk to them about the treatments I offer.

If anyone has any pointers about what I could possibly to drum up some extra business, then that would be most welcome! I’ve already read an excellent post by a senior geek about possibly writing to local golf clubs/hotels about offering a treatment voucher to be raffled off at their next charity event, however had no bites yet!

Thank you in advance 🫶🏼

I empathise with you. Because in this day and age we have such a saturated market full of good and bad therapists. Also every 10 yards there's a new shop that opens up every month. This isn't good because clients get to dictate prices and waste a lot of time for therapists. The one piece of advice I would give to someone starting out is either first get a job which will pay you a wage and do homers. Or start your business from home or mobile, because it keeps costs low. Money is hard to come by these days, and this incudes us therapists and clients, that's why they're always on the look out for bargains and groupons..... If you really want to stay in a salon environment then be prepared to sit there most of the time. Your interpersonal skills will come in handy, and you'll ned to be super outgoing, yet firm. You'll have to constantly post on all your social media and run adds. This is hard on mind, body and soul at times and it's something you can't let up on..... Networking, making contacts with others and developing other potential opportunities like teaching or running some awareness courses. As the saying goes, see one, do one teach one.... It's a lot of hard work, and if you keep at it, it will pay off, it will just take a long time and some investment so be prepared for that.

Hope this helps
Nicky

PS..... Trying doing something even get some training in something that no-one else does, to get a competitive edge....

Hi. How's it going now closer to Christmas? I have a salon with a beauty room and we do a lot of promotions for them as I feel it does serve our customers well to have a quality service available. I cross-post on Social and send emails. She does her own thing too but got booked very quickly. Will your salon business do that for you?
Just to let you know I do run an online course to help salons attract new customers. I let my therapist have access to it and she found it super helpful in attracting people to her. Let me know if you be interested in something like that

Hello! Thanks so much for replying. Please do let me know if you can see my reply, as I did post one to the lady above you, but for some reason I can’t see it?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ It has picked up slightly, but not loads. I would love to have more information on your course! Many thanks 😊
