If any of you work at home, is the autoclav an essential part of your basic setup to ensure a safe & sanitary environment? Or would soaking the implements in a desinfecting solution sufficient?

Hi

I dont think it is nessesary to have an autoclave to store sterilized tools. I clean all my tools and then soak in barbicide a hospital grade disinfectant before using. I keep them in the barbicide and because there stainless steel they dont rust.

I use a brush to remove dust from my files and then spray with
Chlor-i-spray which is great for cleaning my table aswell.

Only if you are planning to perform invasive surgery on your clients ;)

If you can (and want to) invest in one... go for it... but I wouldnt. The only real difference between disinfecting and sterilising is that sterilising will kill spores.
The only time spores are a concern is if you are (once again) performing surgery.
as soon as your impliments are exposed to air, they will no longer be sterilised as spores exist everwhere anyway.

Anyoooo... just my 2 bits. ;)
