Hi, sorry to be a pain but i trained in hairdressing over 15 years ago so have forgotten most of what i learnt, i am thinking of going on a refresher course in colouring but i don't want to work as a hairdresser as i didn't really enjoy it and wasn't really that good at cutting he he.

I have dark blonde hair naturally and have been going to a salon for about 3 years now to have it lightened to a very light blonde, i told them that i didn't want it bleached but wanted it as light as you can get it without using bleach and it is a really nice pale blonde colour. The salon is now closed down and i have been having one of the stylists colour my hair from home, she said she can't use what they used in the salon as it is too expensive so she is using a tint made by Koleston (she said it's the lightest you can get without using bleach.

My question is duh! do you have to use peroxide to get your hair to a light blonde and is peroxide not a bleach ( i thought it was) also what volume should she be using as my head is really itchy, should it be 20%

Sorry to ask so many daft questions but i can hardly remember anything i was trained.

Sorry i meant to say volume 20 peroxide not 20% duh!

Hi there

Wow you really have forgotten so i won't be technical

Ok hun, peroxide is what is mixed with a tint or bleach,it is the developer, only true semi colours do not require peroxide, all others do or they simply won't work

Without peroxide you will not be able to lighten your hair at all,be it with bleach or tint

Whether or not you use bleach depends on the base shade of your natural hair and the amount of desired "lift"

Sorry i meant to say volume 20 peroxide not 20% duh!

20 vol or 6% is used when adding depth or tone, this will not lift, you need at very least 9% allthough 12% or 40 vol is recomended with use of bleach

If you suffer with scalp irritation i would recomend off scalp colour either foil or cap highlights

Thanks guys.

So what volume should she be using to get a good lift without yellow tones but that isn't too strong for my scalp?

She should know :!:

She should be using off the scalp methods, 9 or 12% depending on your desired outcome.

Gold tones shouldn't be present if developed correctly, your hairdresser should also know how to counteract them if they are.

Color star :!: i'm sure you remeber that one :D

well you would think so wouldn't you! i like my hair to look really really light, i am thinking of going elsewhere now but thought if i went to her pre-armed with knowledge first and knew the precentages of the peroxide then she wouldn't think i was being funny.

I don't really want to stop using her as she is a friend but she does charge an awful lot just for doing my re-growth £26.

Price wise, that's competitive IMO however if you are not happy/confident with the service i would recommend you find a colour technician,a specialist.

You will pay more, but if your hair is your crowning glory it's worth it.

Good luck

i know what your saying but when i see the products in Sally's and it only costs £7 for the tint and not much for the peroxide it makes me think.

You are paying for a professional service and result IMO

Let's face it over the counter "dyes" are only about that price, but just not worth it in my professional opinion :D

get what your saying but i am trained, just out of practice, so i could do it myself if i could remember the correct volume and i wouldn't have to pay out so much, i wouldn't dream of doing it on anyone else though.

Would Sally's be able to advise me what volume to use to get the correct lift or would it say in the Koleston pack as i think i am just going to buy my own.

All professional colours come with instructions,i personally would do a course before even doing your own, especially if don't remember the basics of colouring hths

sallys do courses in cutting and colouring , you just have to be trained , hth xx
