Ok so I'm sure we all get those clients who come in with filth caked under their free edge. Do any nail techs actually clean under there?

At work we dont (and I'm glad for that as eww people should be doing this themselves as part of their hygeine routein)

I've had a few people come and ask if we do though, and they seem suprised when I say no.

I send them to the bathroom to use soap, water and nail brush

I think it is very disrespectful if clients come in with filthy nails. They are welcome to have a scrub-up but anything that remains under their nails after that, they can take home with them as well . . . . my job is on TOP of the nail, not underneath lol Good heavens, who knows what might be under there

Cant say its a nice thing to see, but i don't mind once i have directed them to the wash basin.

yukky i hate that....i do wash my hands before the treatment so i ask them to do the same...and use the sanitise gel many times during the treatment ....!!

Rude!......No, I show them the soap, water and nailbrush

xxx

Nope, my dirty nail policy is this.

I have a supply of clean nail scrubbers in my desk.. When I send the client to the sink to wash their hands, I hand them a nailbrush if the nails are dirty, this gives the message "scrub those filthy nails you dirty beggar" - in a nice way of course!

My nail brushes are soaked in barbicide solution after use. I would refuse to perform a service on anyone with excessively dirty nails. Would you go to the dentist without brushing your teeth? Same principle.

No, I don't clean under the free edge.

I can't believe it when people come into a salon with crud (or God knows what) under their fingernails. YUK! I would never do that to my nail professional.

well tbh.. i do. cant help it..
if after the initial scrub and wash they are still filthy .. stained ect.. they get a good going over with an old brush and some cuticle/stain remover.. a quick suds up with the brush over the nail before cuticle removal does the trick and a swipe under the fe only takes a second..
This of course gets added to there service charge.. as a full cuticle removal as opposed to a dry.

Never!!That's gross, i have my clients wash their hands and use a clean nail brush.

I agree, ew ew ew!!!! but some people just dont have a clue so I send them politely to the wash basin with a nail brush

Im suprised tbh.. i mean, i see it as part of my job to transform their hands and nails.. so wouldnt getting rid of gunk under nails be part of that?
I certainly wouldnt do anything over the top of filth..
i have one client who when she first came had terrible terrible nails.. she is a gardener as a hobby..
now she has lovely nails.. wears gloves etc.. and actually learnt from me.. it took a few sessions to clean up her hands but we got there..
i just dont understand the ewwww's.. what do you do when it comes to feet?

Isnt this our job?

hi
what about people who come in that want a cut, and won't have it washed. and there hair is filthy, pulling the comb through the hair and you feel bumps, loose skin dried up skin, i don't investigate, finally when the cuts done they informme, that they shall go home and give it a wash now.
yikes !!! couldn't you have washed it before you came in, honestly i just couldnt do that, mind i 'd never have hair that dirty anyway.thg:mad:

Littlegrohl - I'm inclined to agree with you. Surely if the dirt remains after their nails have been, it's leaving a breeding ground for more germs?

Oh wow I never even thought of that, I couldnt imagine having to touch someones hair that was like that!!!
I couldnt stand going to any professional who had to touch any part of me before fully showering first. I guess some people dont notice that they are dirty :irked:

I send evrybody to wash and scrub their hands and nails before I start anything.
If the nails are still dirty after, I will get the nail brush out and do them again.
I make light of the matter and clients usually make fun of themselfs for having dirty nails.
I take pride in my work and and I find that there is nothing more satisfying than a client with manky nails, coming in to my salon, walking out with beautiful shiny nails.( mayby I need to get a life:rolleyes: lmao)
I find clients are more impressed when they see that a salon puts hygine at the top of the list iykwim.
And any how, how are you supposed to see if there is a possible contraindication if you don't get the dirt out of the way first.
xx:hug:xx

scrub , nail brush and basin for me aswell . but if some stuff remaining have to admit i will get rid of it before i start, although will always make sure i have my gloves on. think its disrespectful for a client to come with their nails in this state but some things will never change.
ciara

I agree with chels here....i see it as part of my job to make sure they are clean brfore i start. Dont we have precision tools for doing this (i do!) ....some dirt and grime are stuborn and need a little extra nudge to get it away....ie... like cuticle remover and such tools. Being still quite new to it all i feel i have to remove anything that i see that might cause a problem with the enhancements so that i can really narrow down where i get any problems.

I agree with you also Chels, it's not always nice but in the end there will be some clearing out to do under the nail - what about when you have finished either a set of enhancements or a manicure???? it all comes out then with the dust or products!

It's not very pleasant and I can't say that I like doing it (especially if they are really minging, so I can see why some are going "ewww") but I get more satisfaction knowing I have done a fantastic job in every area of the hand treatment. sian1979 you are correct also - we do have tools to do this part of the treatment :wink2:

Edited to Add

The other thing is if they wash their hands only , the gunk is still there, just not as noticeable. If they, are handed a nailbrush, don't they feel embarrassed???? I know I would be and I wouldn't go back (not that anyone needs to clean under my nails

Some clients also expect it as part of the service - one of my ladies once complained that her previous tech didn't do it and that she had to keep asking her to do it for her!

BTW I'm not criticising anyone who doesn't perform that bit of the service - like I said earlier I don't actually like doing it, but I do it anyway
