just wondered if any one has these already its something i have fancied for a while and with the fish pedicure becoming more popular i am thinking about it again! i have read its completly hygenic if you get a specialist aquarium! my main concern was the animal right part of it, is this a issue?

The treatment has been offered in the USA for a couple of years now and there seems to be more and more states banning the practice because of hygiene concerns...

there is a large shop in the trafford centre called appy feet offering only fish pedicures so it must be pretty hygienic i personally dont like the idea of putting my feet in the same water someone has just got out of but there is always a massive queue out of the shop, it is new though so may last x

I think the appy feet people do franchises but am not sure. I think you have to know what you are doing with the fishes.

I would love to have the fish but I think you need a good knowledge of the fishes and how to look after them, what they like and the kind of filtration you would need to keep the tanks hygienic for them and your clients.

What will be next? A hair salon where trained chimps do your hair, it's all a bit bizarre for me.

This treatment is obviously very popular but the thought of it makes me want to throw up! I don't know how people can put their feet into that water surely it's not hygienic as it can't be chemically treated because that would kill the fish?!

LOL this is the future :)

Im with you all - I used to keep tropical fish and well - alot of up keep - are they cold, I guess not so they will need a heater in the water(electric shocks anyone), and what about the fish pooo, lol:), Cleaning the filter!

I personally would not want to put my hands in the water after a day, as I guess you couldnt use a plug because the fish would go down the hole!!!

Intriguing though , well im sure they will end up being interbred, and we may end up with a Jaws fish!!!!

A friend of mine has just come back from Thailand and they have these fish peds in supermarkets with lots of people sitting around dangeling their feet in huge aquariums / ponds, whatever! What was really funny is that it was something to do with Tesco's and when they paid they got their clubcard points!

and as we all know Tescos motto

EVERY LITTLE HELPS:)

I have the tank in my salon and am getting the fish today.
It is totally hygenic! You wouldn't be allowed to do it if it wasn't!
The clients feet are washed before the treatment and the tank has a Uv sterilser and a 4 level filtration system which keeps the water clean and kills harmful bacteria constantly.
You replace a couple of buckets of water twice daily and use a special hoover to clean any waste.
Not sure I understand why people would be worried about putting their feet in after someone else as I'm sure most of you go swimming in the sea which is filthy?!
I'll let you know how popular it is and any other info I get today when the guy comes with the fish!
Oh also it has been banned in the States as they were doing it the Asian way where you have multiple people with their feet in one tank, not very hygenic.

I think you're 'allowed to do it' because the treatment is new (in the UK) and no legislation has, yet, been passed. However, the USA have had these fish pedicures for a few years now and, so far, 14 states have banned them for hygiene reasons.

Hi Emma,
How many people does the tank treat at one time?
Has the set-up costs been really expensive?
What company did you get your tank & fish from?
Emma x:hug:x

From all the research i have done so far i have discovered there is no possible way of getting the tanks and fish for less then a few £1,000.

We was looking into setting up the tanks etc ourself but i have never done that well keeping goldfish never mind garra rufa.

Naaah, it's Chimps hand pulling the hairs out for your next Brazilian :)

If this has been banned in USA then what happened to all the fishes? Surely the salon owners won't want to keep them if they cannot bring profit?

And what would happen if you bought them then the treatment was banned? I hope they don't get poisoned or flushed down the loo  poor fishies!

I think its potentially a good investment, but would need to look well into hygiene issues, health & safety of the little fishies (how to look after them etc) and be willing to ensure they are not neglected if the treatment is banned, or anything like that.

Surely a pet shop or a fish breeder could give advice if you are unsure how to look after them
