The past couple of months I have suffered with really bad "gunky eyes" at the end of each day (sometimes my days are 12 hours long). They don't itch at all, but it seems as soon as I finish work for the day it starts up.

I have been to the Doctors who has confirmed that I do not have an infection, and to the opticians who say that there is nothing wrong with my eyes.

I make sure that my work room is well ventilated at all times. I have an extractor built in the table as well as a freestanding one, and most times when it's warmer I have the windows wide open. I always put a lid on my acrylic liquid and place it in a drawer as soon as I have finished with it, and try to sculpt the shape of the nail, so I do not have to file too much to get the desired finish.

I was wondering if it's just tired eyes or maybe all of a sudden I am having a restion to the L & P. I use CND products.

Does anyone else suffer with this or is it just me.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has this problem.

Sally, I personally do not have any problems with my eyes. However here is my 2 pennies worth
- if you are using an e-file, change to a good quality hand file and learn good filing techniques, as an e-file creates the smallest dust particles and spins the dust up into the air. Good hand filing techniques allow you to file down into a table mat.
- ensure that you sit upright and have a good distance between you and the nail enhancement when filing. (don't hunch and bring your face closer to the enhancement.
- wear protective eyewear - some protective eyewear look quite good, not like the big goggles of yesteryear:lol:
- wash your hands after every service, we get dust trapped under our own fingernails and you maybe rubbing your face.

Are you by any chance, without thinking, rubbing your eyes at the end of a service, before you wash your hands ?

I think both your Dr and your optician have confirmed you are not suffering from any reaction to your products .... I think you sound to be suffering from many hours in that salon and are just tired and weary.

Good advice in the other posts which you would do well to listen to.

I have a homemade eyewash that works wonders... it's 2 drops of roman chamomile in 90ml of purified water. Makes eyes fresh and sparkly.

Hi there

Hope your gunky eyes are better now but if not here is a routine my optician gave me. Her advice was on a great little leaflet (that I have since lost). I tried it and it is very effective.

Take 2 make-up pads (those flat cotton-wool things you girls use) one for each eye.
Wet the first pad with lukewarm water and squeeze off excess. Open out the wet pad. Now close the eyes lightly - do not screw them shut.
Starting with the left eye, wipe the pad slowly upwards from just under the eye and dragging up the lower lash. Do this 3 or 4 times. Then do the same thing only downwards from above the left eye. Again repeat 3 or 4 times. Important - discard the pad.

Now using the other pad do exactly the same for the right eye.

There was another routine on the leaflet if this method didn't work but I cannot remember what it was!

sorry if this sounds ming, but is it gunky like conjunctivitis? or like stringy bits that you can pull out and they feel like they're wrapped arouund your eyeball? I get the latter (I call them eye boogies ) but removing makeup at night helps but I get leaky eyes too which usually means I get makeup in my eyes during the day, and this creates eye boogies lol xx

What spring to my mind is that the air could be too dry (do you have air conditioning), or extractor fan. This can be very drying in the air. A bit like if you wear contact lenses and work in air conditioned environments, this can become very drying and make eyes irritated.

Obviously your dr has rules out infection, so I would hazard a guess it is related to your environment. Try placing a bowl of water to add humidity to the air below radiators.

just to add - you can buy saline eye drops or a saline bath from your chemists relatively inexpensively. Will be sterile and perfect for cleansing/moistening the eye area.
