Do you feel old??

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids
in the 50's, 60's, 70's and even early 80's probably shouldn't have
survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured
lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no
child-proof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and
it was fine to play with pots and pans.

When we rode our bikes we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent
'spokey dokey's' on our wheels As children, we would ride in cars with no
seat belts or air bags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted
the same... strange how water tastes just like ....well ...water!

We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in
it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

Your mother MADE ice pops out of dilutable orange drinks.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no one
actually died from this..

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top
speed down the hill, only to find out we had forgotton the brakes.

After running into stinging nettles a few times we learned to solve the
problem (dock leaves).

We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we
were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one
minded.

We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99
channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones,
no personal computers, no DVDs and no Internet chat rooms.

We had friends - we went outside and found them.

We played football and rounders every summer, and sometimes that ball
really hurt!

We fell out of trees, got cut, and broke bones but there were no lawsuits.

We had full on fistfights but no prosecution followed from other parents.

We played knock-on-the-door-and-run-away and were actually afraid of the
owners catching us.

We WALKED, yes walked to friends' homes.

We also believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or
daddy to drive us to school - which was just round the corner

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls

We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood (kinda
like a cape, looked cool when you went really fast).

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law.

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of
innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them Congratulations! (Well done living this long).

Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before
lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.

For those of you who aren't old enough thought you might like to read
about us.

This, my friends, is surprisingly frightening and it might put a smile on
your face: The majority of students in universities today were born in
1986. They are called youth.

Check this out!
They have never heard of "We are the World", "We are the children", and
the Uptown Girl they know is by West life not Billy Joel.

They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena Cherry or Belinda
Carlisle (..."ooo Heaven is a place on Earth, you make Heaven a place on
Earth"...) The Undertones, The Kinks or
Elkie Brooks.

For them, there has always been only one
Germany and one Vietnam.

AIDS has existed since they were born.

CD's have existed since they were born.

Michael Jackson has always been white.

To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't
imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance.

They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are only movies.

They can never imagine life before computers.

They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, or the Famous Five

They'll never have applied to be on "Jim'll Fix It" .

They can't believe a black and white television ever existed And they will
never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone.

Now let's check if we're getting old.

1 You understand what was written above and you smile.
2 You need to sleep more, usually until the afternoon, after a night out.
3 You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably with
computers.
4 When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head.
5 You remember watching Dirty Den in East-Enders the first time round.
6 You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good old
days, repeating again all the funny things you have experienced together.
7 Having read this mail, you are thinking of forwarding it to some other
friends because you think they will like it too.

And finally, remember - you are not old - just fortunate!

Oh those really were the GOOD OLD DAYS. I too remember going out on my bike for the whole day with a pack of sandwiches and a bottle of pop, and getting back before it was dark. How I wish the kids today could have that sort of freedom. but alas I dont think it will ever be like that again.

Those were the days lol
Brought back so many childhood memories, Shame things have changed so much.

OMG the whole of that is so true....why is it that I feel afraid to let my eldest (8) to go out of my sight and play?? He's sensible and would do as I asked him..to come home before dark....but for some reason I'm afraid to let him go....were our parents more liberal?...I wouldn't class myself as conservative.....or has the country we live in changed so much.....or has my perception of the world, as I have got older changed?....Or am I scared that because of the freedom I was given as a kid/teenager made me street wise and I don't want my kids to do the things I did?

When I think about it, I can't understand my own thinking because I loved my freedom at 8 9, 10.... going over the park, listening to music, playing out with friends etc.... but I am so reluctant to let my kids do it.

WHY???

Is it because the media highlights too many dangers for our children....weren't they there when we were kids but just never in the eye of the news or has the country really changed that much that we can't let our kids be kids?

Does anyone else have these fears and concerns....I'd love for my kids just to go out and play outside the confines of the garden as I used to do.....what's stopping me?

 aahh the good old days

i think computers and playstations are a poor substitute for running around outside and making friends:cry:

( of course we do need computers for geeking):wink2:

Wooooooooowwwwww!! Brings back so many good, wholesome memories, the good old days...the world is just not the same anymore, now we have to worry about out children being accosted, molested, caught in a bad crowd, caught in some sort of attack by some crazed lunatic, raped (boy or girl)...it's terrible we can't give them the freedom that we once had and I wish that we could, I wish that I could let my 15 year old run about like he wanted to without being so worried, but I can't. The world we live in today has forced us into beind wardens rather than parents...I long for the good old days....

Yep I can relate to this time also, (my brother wrote to Jim'll fil it!! , and I use to pretend to be Daisy out of the Dukes of Hazard..........wish i had her legs lol).
Times have changed, the world is becoming an ugly place, I'm also scared to let my two, aged 5 & 6 play in the garden alone as they can be seen from the road. I dont want them to miss out on the fun we had as children and I'm not looking forward to the day they want to go clubbing with their friends!! I might go with them.........the oldest swinger in town, I promise I wont wear hotpants..... :wink2: lol.

that was sooo cool!
i identified with all of that!
with regards to kids now, i have a son of 7, and a daughter of 12 (going on 20!)
6 yrs ago, we moved to a quiet part of town, a cul-de-sac.
it's as safe as it CAN b, the cars are few and far between and they move slowly.
most of the families are older, but a few have children of a similar age.
eversince callum was about 4, he was desperate to play outside.
i eventually let him play outside with his cousin, who is 4 yrs his senior, or jema.
over the last 2-3 yrs, his freedom has gradually grown.
he is allowed in a certain radius, it doesn't involve crossing any main roads, it includes 2 green areas to play football in, and a circuit of our road and 3 others.
this situation wasnt without its worries, he didnt always remember his guidelines!
he has to tell me which part of the area i can find him in if i need him in.
he has to report back in if they go to a friends house, so i know where he is.
we have had a couple of heart stopping moments, but thats not bad in 3 yrs!

jema has also gradually increased her freedom.
she is allowed to go into town to meet friends, she has her mobile with her. i sometimes check in with her when shes out.
my salon is in the town, so she sometimes comes to me after school, then goes to the town and then home.
she has to b in by 7pm, always have her phone with her, and i need to know where she plans to b when shes out.

they dont have as much freedom as i had as a child, but they have more than a lot of my clients children do.

i agree with the risk taking bit of the original post.
i want my kids to be safe, but also to b street wise.
in 1 way, if they are kept under wraps when they are at school, they will not cope as well when they leave school as they haven't learnt how to judge a situation for themselves.

i also think that we hear much more in the media now, which makes us over cautious.
dont get me wrong, it doesnt stop me worrying, but thats what parents are there for, worrying!
but also, we are there to judge a situation and guide our kids to help judge it for themselves.

fantasic and so true, a few more things

Chopper bikes
Roller skates (not boots)
The Monkees (the tv series)
kanackers (ohh the bruises)
hoola hoops
tortoises as pets

I could go on.

OMG!!! I was born 1980 & can relate to quite alot on list!!!LOL

Does anyone remember making rose petal perfume!?!

I like it & wish I was a kid again (some times).
I remember the rose petal perfume Louise and then there was the little daisy chains.
The world has changed so much and kids now don't seem to understand the word "Fresh Air". Can you image giving them four kitchen chairs and a sheet to go camping, out in the back garden?? Me think not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I once had to explain to my 15 year old niece what a "record" was! She's only ever had CDs.

My brother had a chopper. He fell off so many times (mostly riding into parked cars) the hospital told my mom he had exceeded the legal safe limit for x-rays and to get rid of the bike!

Why don't we let our kids play outside...?
Answer: because Judges don't do their job and keep letting criminals off to roam the streets.
