Does anyone else have this and how do you stop it or even reduce it?

I have 2 cavaliers, now Baileys (puppy) getting older we can really notice the smell, despite constant cleaning, mopping, hoovering, and spraying air freshners it's still very noticable :irked:
The house is mainly laminated except the stairs, they sometimes lay here which we are trying to stop, but the stair carpet doesn't smell neither do the dogs??

I've been reading about Air Purifiers/ionizers and wondered if they actually work on removing pet odours?

Thanks in advance

frequent washing of their bedding helps my dogs bed is usually where the source of the smell is xxxx:hug:

I have a cavalier King Charles and I make sure his bedding is washed frequently and also I have become addicted to plug in air freshners, oil candles etc... I also find that I have to open all windows in the house first thing to air the house, I dont mind this but my hubby and daughter sits with big jumpers on and their teeth chattering lol

There is nothing worse than going in to a house that is overpowered by dog odour, any many dog owners stop noticing it after a while poo wee!

When we had a dog we restricted him to downstairs only, and never allowed on furniture etc, baby gates can keep your pooches out of certain rooms etc, unfortunately the dog odour is part and parcel of owning a dog, but avoid over bathing them as this can make them secrete more smelly oils, and in summer clip clip clip, even short looking hair habours lots of smell and clipping in the summer can help to reduce the pong alot.

I know doggies are our best friends and we want to share our lives with them but keep them in one or two rooms of the house and keep the dogs outdoors as much as you can, hope this helps!

Hi there, i have 2 dogs and we did get that awful doggy smell around the house but you can buy the shake and vac pouches that you put ontop of the filter in your hoover and then every time you hoover your rooms will smell lovely and fresh!! :)

As well as ensuring that both and their bedding are clean I can thoroughly recommend ParytLite products for getting rid of nasty niffs. Their reed diffusers are perfect for just such a job!

Mmmmm sounds interesting, just looked at their website tho and it doesn't say where to buy or how much? :irked:

Hiya - I have three little Westies and agree that it can be a nightmare keeping the place clean and odour-less! We are currently selling our house and it's a real chore keeping it clean etc. We have always managed to keep the house smelling dog-free and I have a couple of tips. The first tip if you can do it, is to always keep the dog beds out of the main areas. We are lucky to be able to keep ours in the utility room. Always wash the bedding as often as possible, especially in the wetter months. I always put the dogs back into their beds after being out in the garden. This helps to dry them off a bit and the dirt that collects around their paws and noses tends to dry and fall to dust in their beds (perhaps this is just mine because they dig a lot!) My biggest tip is to open the windows and air the house! I know it sounds silly, but I really notice if I haven't aired the house. I prefer to clean constantly rather than use air fresheners etc, but I hope my suggestions help!

Ah, you buy it via home parties (hence the name). You just need to find a local consultant who will come and give a show at your home - you invite some girlie chums around and have a glass of wine, see some beautiful candles and different holders, and order what you like! I held one and it was brilliant!
I've just started out as a consultant and would be happy to come do a show for you; pm me if you're interested!

Im actually surprised to hear you have the nif if youve laminate flooring,I thought it was spossed to be more hygienic, therefore less niffy, dont know if its because the dogs are older.Weve laminate flooring and a young dog,but I dont think my house smells.

My friend has a dog the same age as ours, she has carpets and her house niffs, oohh and so does her coat..well at least I dont think my house smells I might ad..lol.

I also brought a rug recently for my front room ,the dog kept laying on it ,it started to stink the hoover out, thats why I thought usually dogs and carpets caused a smell.

Make sure when the dogs are washed (groomed) they are completely dry, or they will dry themselves on the carpet. A good way around this is to put essential oils on them when they are damp "only when it's warm" (let them dry themselves on the floor), which deoderises the whole house at the same time.:)

If they get rained on, ..... wash them, as dampness releasing a certain pong.

Also their dripping saliva on surfaces can make things smell doggy.

If your house is laminate/tiled blah blah blah, a steam mop will really clean and sanitise the surfaces (about every 3rd day).

Make sure they are not doing sneaky pees anywhere.

Here in Aus there are companies that make essential oil deodorizes (it's like a roll on deodorant) that you run down their backs, make them smell almost edible.

Funny thing about dogs is, the better you make them smell, the more they will try and dirty themselves. Wash em and they will try and find something dead to try and roll in.

Dropped dog fur also has an odor, so make sure you vacuum regularly.

When all else fails ..... GET A POODLE, or another dog with wool, tight lips and no droopy jowels.

And "yes", I am biased.:)

Thanks guys,

Nailzoo where can I find out more about the doggy roll on??!

My doggy is'nt smelly but her bed is so it gets washed every week, and I also open the windows in the morning to air out the "doggy" smell. I also have candles going during the day, I am paranoid about doggy smells.

My friend says that my house doesnt smell at all of dog but I can still smell it.

I've got a Westie (they shed very little)

She has a 'bath & hair cut' every 6 weeks and we bath her half way (at vets recommendation - not for all breeds) between appointments. We use a special shampoo which we originally obtained through our vet but now buy online.

On haircut day all bedding is washed - and her towels are laundered weekly.

Another point to consider is what you feed a dog. Kelsie is fed James Wellbeloved kibble with a little chopped chicken and veg on top...........I have found that pouched/tinned food has made her smell more doggy. HTH

I agree with Adele, we feed our dogs James Wellbeloved too, along with chopped chicken and not only does it really agree with their digestion (!) it also makes their coats healthier. One of my dogs has a skin complaint and this food has helped to clear it up meaning she smells actually quite nice now! I also agree that washing the dog helps, but don't wash them too often as it can sometimes cause their natural oils to wash away and cause skin issues. HTH
