Hi there - just wanted a bit of advice!! My mum has extremely bad eczema all over her hands and sometimes on her arms and legs etc. She has now been having tests with specialists for several months-they've told her it's the worst form of eczema you can get - that many layers of skin have come off her hands that it is the same as degree burns.

I know people will say I shouldn't have, but I put her a set of L&P's on about 6 weeks ago after doing one nail as a trial the week before - her hands virtually cleared up overnight and she was amazed - I think it was because she was used to shorter nails and now she cannot scratch herself - just wondered if any of you knowledgable geeks out there had any more tips (lotions/potions etc) to help!!!

(ps - she has had no reaction to the enhancements and the doctors say this is fine)

Less scratching leads to less stress and anxiety and that always helps this condition.

Solar Oil will also help relieve the inflammation and itching.

So pleased for her that she is feeling better, whatever the reason. It is a very distressing condition for anyone who has it.

Thanks - I was a little worried about putting enhancements on but I kept a close eye on her hands and they have thrived!!!!

Enhancements should be applied to the nails not the skin ... should have no effect at all on her skin if applied with skill and the normal precautions to avoid skin contact.

I must be doing something right then as they have turned out so well and made her happy and less uncomfortable - makes it even better to see people compliment on them

I have suffered for years, enhancements is one of the best ways to stop the itching, you can't get as much friction as you can with a natural nail.

My other best tip ( apart from the sunbed ) is to wear white, when you itch to the extent that it weeps and bleeds it will show up on white clothing and causes embarrassment therefore stopping you doing it in the first place.

Hth send her my love it is an awful thing to deal with on a daily basis xx

I suffer with excema terribly and it makes me so miserable. I have had it since I was a little baby and I think that enhancements makes my excema better as they are not sharp and it stops me from scratching. So it does work! I have been told that I have to go on UV treatment in 4 weeks time as my excema has got so bad! Nothing seems to help it, guess its just a vicious circle. Hope your mum gets better real soon xx

My eldest son has severe dermatitis (similar to eczema) on his hands and of all the things that came up when they skin tested him, Nickle (got that allergy from me:eek: )was the worse but not the only thing he reacted to. He used various steroid creams and although they cleared it up initially the cream thins the skin so it is actually more prone to damage now. He had 3 different creams to alternate as his hands got used to one and it stopped working. He stopped using the cream altogether when a woman at work suggested that he tried Neutrogena Swedish Formula hand cream in the tube with the red top (the unperfumed one), since using this and avoiding nickle his hands are fine most of the time now. Might be worth your mum trying it, you can get it in Superdrug.

I took out of the library a book on Eczema this week and it really helped me to understand this condition more.
I guess the best thing to do is the same ( read up on it) . I know I have studied anatomy and physiology and the likes during my training and work but it was really refreshing to read more depth about Eczema. there was also again an full explaination of skin, its purpose, the epidermis, dermis and exactly whats going on in there. I had read all this before but it was good to read it again from the Eczema patients point of view.

Diet change is not a "cure" for eczema. My mother kept goats for years and swears blind that goats milk helps sufferers of Eczema. mind you you have to cut out cows milk, and most if not all other dairy products. GPs generally dont endorse Goats milk but my mum, her goat keeper friends and many eczema sufferers do believe it works and helps.

There is actually no cure for eczema, as it is often inherited if you are born into an atopic family (prone to allergies) and usually comes from the mothers side not the fathers. However steps can be taken to minimize the effects of it and actually stop it occuring, which can be better than using long term steroid creams, although the tendency will still always be there.
Removing culprit foods, that seem to be aggravating the condition, from the diet completetly can help enormously ...BUT...this should always be done under guidance from a Dietician or Specialist dealing with food allergies, or the diet can become deficient in essential nutrients.
Regarding the bit about GP's NOT endorsing goats milk. My youngest son has multiple food allergies (wheat, milk, eggs, and many more) and was admitted to hospital numerous times in his first year of life due to severe reactions that even made him bleed internally. The paediatrician told me that most severe allergies are above most GP's heads and we even had a GP phone in when I was with the consultant asking her to tell the patient in his office that there is no such thing as a milk allergy in children:eek: the paediatrician was amazed at this and just told the GP to refer the child to her!! This Paediatrician that my son was under, DID endorse Goats milk, Sheeps milk and Soya milk (we got the Soya milk on prescription), as alternatives to cows milk although there have been some concerns about Soya milk lately. You can also get cheese, yoghurts etc made from the alternative milks too. HTH

I have really bad exzema on my hands so much so especailly in Winter they crack, bleed & itch all the time. Just have to cover them in cream & where gloves for doing treatments when they get that bad. Find hands are much better in summer though!!! Starting to get worse again at the moment though. I'm curious though I've started getting a form of exzema round my eyes it comes & goes but started around the time I started doing nails. I think it might be the dust from filing the acrylic as they itch like mad when I've done a set!! I'm on Antihistomeans which I can take when needed but the thought of having to be on them permenantely doesn't fill me with joy, I'm definately not going to give up nails!!! :) Think I read a thread a while back about someone else having these symtoms aswell?
Have to say though that I have no problems wearing enhancements but do find I CAN scratch more with them as I tend to wear them quite square!! I have started rounding off the edges but at the time it feels so good to scatch LOL I know I shouldn't as it really makes it worse!!

Leah I started to get redness around my eyes, ears and hands. Turns out I'd changed brands of sanitiser and it was this causing the problem, to the point that if I rubbed my face it set it off there too. As soon as I switched back it sorted itself ... that's what you get for compulsive buying at the exhibitions lol!

LOL I'm a compulsive buyer too!!! Erm yeh it might be that but I've always used the same brand as all my stuff is NSI. I do feel really itchy on my face though especailly my eyes when doing the filing even the slightest bit of dust seems to start it off & then to make it worse you then have to scratch or rub so any dust that may be on my hands then goes around my eyes I guess. Not sure what to do as I love what I do!!!! :) They are driving me mad at the moment did my nails last night & my eyes are itching like mad!! Stronger tablets me thinks LOL!!

Thanks you lot - got some really good advice which I will pass on to mum. She has tried virtually everything she can - had all the tests and scans at the hospital and even went to one of thos chinese herbal doctors (that didnt work - the stuff she had to boil just stank the house out!!!)

I soaked off her L&P's last night as she got a hospital appointment today and she didnt want them to know that she'd had enhancements on as they'd only blame them for the condition of her skin (sounds stupid I know) but she phoned me this morning and her hands are in a right state cos she has her own nails short she's been able to stratch her hands and they bled all over so as soon as I finish work today I'm off over there to put on another set

My doctor told me that the reason for my eczema is because my skin lacks a kind of oil that normal skin has/produces.... and mine produces less! Stress and the wether... autum and winter when its dry and frosty is the worst.

My doctor told me to take some omega3 capsules (you find it in fish). You can buy them at the supermarket and herbalist stores in Denmark. Eczema is ofcourse not cureable, but it worked really good for me together with creme, scratching and the accational going in sane.... As we say in DK " trees does not grow into heaven"

i was born with eczema. so bad, that when my baby teeth came in, they were rotten and my adult teeth suffered too! thank God for my great dentists!
when i'm stressed, my hands flair up wicked! hard to do nails with sore fingeres!
one thing to use is a prescription from the doctor or something called shea butter. it really seems to help and i can put it on my eyelids when they flair up too.
but, the oldest way may help keep the itching away and is cheep. a cooled down tea bag that hasn't been "squished" all the way. the tanic acid will work wonders and can be used on eylids and face, if need be!

i suffer with eczema and have found its the dust from filing that causes my outbursts, but then again i do nails all the time so thats why it aggravates me.

the tiniest bit of dust sets me off, so just watch out for that too

See I am okay with putting enhancements on people, the dust doesn't bother me at all. I just think when I am stressed, upset or worried my excema takes a turn for the worse, but it just gets me down so bad!
