Hi there all skin geeks! :) Can anyone who uses electrolysis needles tell me the best way to dispose of used needles. any replies welcome, feeling geeky xx

I dont use them but i would have hoped this was covered in your training

Heavens, surely they must have taught you this?! I'd have thought you needed a sharps box, but as I don't do electrolysis I can't say for sure. I just know that all sharps need to be disposed of using a proper sharps box (I was an RGN)

didn't you cover this in health&safety during your course?? sharps should be put in a sharps box\bin (cinbins i call them soz ex-nurse..it's a habit) i don't do electroylis but a few girls at college did and they used sharps disposal bins which were then taken to be incinerated .you should contact your local council environmental dept.

This is one of the most important health & safety issues surely should have been covered during training! But yes they are disposed of in a yellow sharpes box, which when three quarters full has to be collected and is taken away and incinerated!

Yep, I would have thought the same. A yellow container marked "Contaminated Sharps" just like they have in hospitals etc.

You have to dispose of the needles in a sharps box and this must be collected by your local authority. It is illegal for you to transport it as you will not hold the relevant license, it is only the local authorities that are allowed to collect form your premises. hth.

SHARPS BOX - SURELY you must have covered this at college - its paramount - and also basic knowledge for the college to teach you this

We had to put them in sharps boxes but to be honest it was never discussed how to dispose of the boxes once they were full so I do understand why you are asking this.

You can buy your sharps boxes from the same place that you get your needles from,
you need to contact your local council for removal of the box, they will charge a small fee for this hth

Yeah same here. I knew they were incinerated.

I once gave the sharpes box to a client who was a nurse who disposed them for me.

I think you can take them to a chemist - or you ring the local environmental health and they will advise you.

HI, I buy my sharps boxes from Sallys, capital or ellisons, then either take it to my local doctors and they have disposed of it for me in the past, but being as haven't lived in this area for long, not sure if they will, so will probably take it to the chemist. years ago my friend who was a body piercer took it from me. You could also ask your local tattooist or body piercer... for a small fee!!!!

Heavens! If you are not using electrolysis then surely you cannot comment. Of course I know that you use a sharps box, I have been in the industry for over 14 years and a lot has changed since my training and as I am new to this site I was just wondering if people who had recently qualified had any new ideas, I thought that people were on this site to be of assistance to each other!!

Don't let it put you off  People are always jumping to conclusions. I do electrolysis but I don't know yet how I will dispose of my sharps box when the time comes. I have clients who work at the hospital, I was thinking of asking them and failing that, I'm just going to phone the council and ask them.

I dont do electrolysis, however i had a sharps box for years, (my dog was diabetic).
When my box was full i used to either contact the council or the vet and they used to take it for a fee.
I also knew someone who worked at the hospital and in the later years he used to dispose of the box for me. :)

There are some disposal companys which take sharp boxes, it may be cheaper than the council, depending where you live you may have to do this as some councils now refuse to take sharp boxes.

ive recently checked this out with an enviromental health officer, in order to have the sharps box collected you have to have a contract with a company providing the service, he told me not to go down that route as it would be expensive especially at the rate you fill your sharps box. I checked with the local chemist who told me that the GP will take it.
