hi all
I have just completed my vtct level 2 nail extensions course, and just wanted to ask if you started off working in a salon or just went to self employed right away.
I ask because I want to work in a salon but cant afford to be self employed right away not until i build up clients. Are there any salons still out there that employ people or is it just rent a table.

Thanks
Claire

Hi Claire,
I worked in a salon full time for 3 years before i went self employed.
I think i really needed that time to build my skills & confidence & more importantly my clientelle!
If you go straight into being self employed & have no clientelle you will prob find it hard to get enough clients to keep your business steady especially at the moment when business isnt great for every one.
Hope this helps.

Hi ClaireJust like to add this is very good advice the way business isnt so good for most at the moment. What you have to remember is that you will have to keep money aside for you Tax and NI and you need your insurance cover etc before you can do clients a.

Hi,

I started working in a salon for 2 years before I ventured out on my own.

I definantly would recomend that you start off in a salon first, like the other geeks have mentioned, to build up skill and much needed confidence!

If you feel that you can do it on your own, then go ahead, but keep in mind that there is alot of competition out there, and business is always hard for the first year or so...so make sure that you are ready for it!

I went straight into working from home b/c my overheads are lower and my local shopping mall charges $260 per week to hire a chair (a station to work). Chair hire, on top of the child care fees I would also have to pay, would have sent me broke. However, the shopping mall has a much higher customer exposure!!
Having said that, I have found working from home harder to get in the clientele because my exposure is limited (not like you see me as you head to the bank :wink2:). There is a lot of competition out there and people do enjoy the fact that they can go shopping and get their nails done at the same time.

So it's a case of 'overheads vs exposure'...

i started working in a salon, employed full time for 3 years before moving to another salon where i was self employed, before working from home.

as i had only just started learning nails, it was good for me, as i learnt alot from the other girls. i also learnt how the business worked. i was lucky to have my boss pay for a conversion course for me to the brand she used, which saved me money. the only downside i had was wages-my boss was very tight with money (by the time i left i was actually on less than min wage as my wage never increased every year when min wage did!!) she also hated spending out for things that may improve her business, which did lose her a few customers.

ive been very lucky though to have customers follow me, and as i work in a call centre evenings and weekends, i also get alot of business from there as well.

some people though have started out mobile staright away and succeeded very well xx
