Can anyone advise? A young lady came in for the first time for nails.

Upon inspection the eponychium was not properly attached to at least 6 of the nails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could lift that area up (not that i did, but it was just like a flap) and peer down, no, really i could if i wanted to!! ........... never ever seen that before. the skin was very inflammed, red and angry and had all the signs of infection. the lady is a biter, so that is probably the root cause, but what the holy heck???

I didnt perform any treatment at all , left it all well alone and advised doctor ASAP.

but, I have had a look through my manuals and books, and also the net but cant find what it might be. I am just being curious really, can anyone shed any light on what the condition is called ? will the area ever reattach? I of course dont want to diagnose as her doc will do that, its just curiousity that is making me ask this question.

I did ask her to let me know, (dont think she will).

thank you

It could be Onychia. Although you didn't mention pus. Or it could be Paronychia. Were her sidewalls swollen and red too?

A lot of times these are caused by cuticle biters who tear at their cuticle causing bacteria or yeast to burrow it's way in there.

Either way, you did the proper thing.

no the sidewalls were not swollen , no pus, it was the strangest thing i have ever seen! it was like the eponychium had somehow lifted up away from the nail, like a flap? i wish had taken a picture now, it was an incredible sight.........disturbing though!

thank you for your thoughts.

Okay, confession time.....I am a chronic picker of my cuticle. I will even use tweezers to make sure that I get it all. Because of this, it "appears" that my eponychium is not attached and it does leave me exposed to bacteria. I do keep my hands really clean though. I have never gotten an infection or made it get any worse then a little redness and swelling immediately after picking on them. I do wear enhancements--right now it's Gelish--and I have never had an issue with burning or anything else. I will just grab hold of the cuticle as soon as I can see it and grab hold of it and pull it off. Bad for me I know, but I've done it for years and I find it the only addiction I can not seem to stop.
