Hi everybody.

I am due to do the CND Foundation course in September and was thinking about buying an Essential Nail Trainer to use to practise after the course.

I would love to know if anybody has used one of these and if they are any good/value for money. Also if anybody could recommend any other training aids/reading material.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Wendy,

I would suggest you contact your CND team and see what they suggest....

In my opinion nail trainers are slightly misleading, they do allow you application practise, but it is so far removed from working on a 'real' person that when it comes time to actually do nails it can be terrifying... Things such as body heat effect the products response a lot...

I always encourage students to work on live models right from the out set, but as I said, your local trainer may have different suggestions...

For other training aids/material again I would suggest waiting, not much of it will make sense till you actually have practical experience ...
But the best book for a nail tech to get an advanced understanding is Doug Schoon's 'Nail structure & product chemistry, 2nd ed)

Just remember, Foundation course is exactly that, a foundation to Start on...

enjoy, you will love it!

Thank you for the advice. I will give my trainer a call and see what she suggests but what you say makes sense. Will have to start rounding up friends and relatives as guinea pigs.

I will also look out for the book you suggested.

I am really looking forward to my training and very excited about it.

Thanks again
Wendy

To be honest I wouldnt go buying a nail trainer just yet if your course is in September. I know its tempting to run out and buy everything you might need but you dont need it yet.

You will probably need a nail trainer to practice on eventually and they are an invaluable tool when you want to practice things and have no willing victims....er...models :green:

Yeah I would advise giving the nail trainer a miss too and offer discounted or free sets to family friends and neighbours.

Good luck x x

I certainly would NOT give the nail trainer a miss !! But I wouldn't buy it now.

At CND we always work on live models and the nail trainer is not to replace live models but to practice technique for which it is an invaluable tool. Over 25 years of teaching, I can tell you that since the nail trainer ... students get their skills to a much higher degree in a faster amount of time than they ever did before we had this training aid.

The nail trainer is a great and sophisticated piece of kit and more like a natural hand than any other aid you can find. Jointed fingers and wrist joint that moves etc. Not having it is the same as thinking hairdresser students do not need wigs and a head to practice on .. of course they do .. 'eyelashers' need false eyelashes to practice on ... doctors and nurses need oranges to practice injections and dead animals to perform operations .. bla bla bla ... (sure glad they don't learn all their skills on live ones) ... It is not terrifying to work on real live clients as you will be doing that from the start also.

I would not buy before your course unless your trainer advises you to ... Your trainer can order a nail trainer for you or you can also get from Sweet Squared (I actually would not advise a 2nd hand one as more often than not it costs you to get it refurbished anyway as it will be missing bits or may even be damaged).

Thanks to everybody for the advice. Just a little too enthusiastic and eager to get started. I have spoken briefly to my trainer and she said I will not need one for the course itself as she no longer uses them as part of the training so I will wait and look again at purchasing one towards the end of the year.

Thanks again
Wendy

Hi Wendy I would highly recommend you invest in a Nail Trainer I still even today play with mine when if there is something I need to work on it is worth its weight in gold.
They can help you in so many levels from tip application to learning how to hold your clients fingers and the file.

Good luck with your course you are going to love it
