 I have just read through the thread 'Why do people think very short courses ar okay?'. Any advise would be greatly appreciated, although I fear I may be past help now.

I have booked onto one of these short courses and have no prior knowledge of nail manicures or pedicures. All I knew was you would not be able to learn anything properly on a distance learning course.

I have paid a sum of non-refundable money to do a two day course in acrylics. Aware that this would only be the start of my training, stupidly, I thought I would at least get a basic knowledge of how to apply acrylics and health and safety etc. The course I am taking is accredited by the Guild.

Is my certificate not going to be worth the paper it is written on? This will mean I have paid a sum of money I couldn't afford to waste.

I searched on the internet for courses and a few came up but tbh, unless you know a little in this field you do not know the genuine companies from the not so genuine.

Like I said any advice would be great. Although I can't afford other training for a few months I thought this would be a start and I could look at doing some one to one for my technique.

Thanks for reading.

Who is the course with??

I'd rather not say at the moment sorry but it's local and an independant not Young nails or anywhere like that.

O no :( Dnt B disheartened. Still do your course if its not refundable then try and build on it with a different one?? Its all experience in the end. Im doing Youngs, but I kno this is only the begginning of my training :) We all have to start somewhere xx

If they are credited by the guild you should be fine, Your certificate will mean you will be able to get the appropriate insurance to do the nail enhamnceents on real people!! Good luck!!

Don't be upset...That thread is mainly on about people thinking that they can do a short course and think thats it.....Its usual for any course to require further training to build on your skills. Just take from the course as much as you can....but do so with the mind frame that you will continue with your training ... x

short courses can be fine, its practise, practise, practise!!! Plus if its accredited then you can use it to go on a conversion with a diff company at a later date. It will prob be fine.xx

A lot of us started like you. Go on your course you paid for it but if I were you I would ask them if it is accredited and what insurance you can get as you will need to have that. Then plan your further training with a top company. Search this site and see what stands out for you but pay attention to the testimonials for each company and ask advice. We are all here to help. You sound like you genually want this so go for it and use the site for research into your next course. Good luck xxx

As already said Claire, it is a starting point. I think for many people on this forum, there are things we would have done differently had one known then what one knows now. Take what you learn and build on it from there.

Be it a good or not so good experience, take yourself further as money allows and keep learning. Above all, stay active on Salon Geek as this is where I have learnt so much valuable information.

Chin up and best wishes.

Thanks everyone - now I've slept on it, I am sure it will be fine.

For once in my life I am doing something I want to do, against my families wishes, thought it may have been an 'I told you so' for them. I was thinking that I may be able to do this, like someone said above, and then do a conversion. That would be great. I was really excited but when I searched through some of the threads my heart sank a little .

It looks like a really lovely place and the tutors sound like they take it seriously. So...

I'll keep my chin up and thanks again everyone. I am so glad I found this site!

Hi Clare

I think I know which place you mean (the one next to the roundabout with the house in the middle?). If so I did my training there, and they were amazing. When you've done the course if your not happy about anything or need help with anything at all they'll help.

Please don't worry! Once you meet the tutors you'll know it was a good choice to go there. Good luck!

I started my training with a short course.
The point would be that you're already aware that those two days are not the be all and end all of your training.

There seems to have been a huge rise in people who do a one or 2 day course on the monday and the tuesday and think by wednesday their work is going to be fabulous and they should be charging top whack.

I started out with an interest in nails. Not an interest in making money.
That (with months of practice and learning) developed into a business.
