oh flippin heck !

i have just been and cleared out my new nail room in a hair salon, its going to look good once its been painted etc BUT I'm really nervous as there is absolutely NO existing clientele  how long would you give it before you admit defeat or success ? obviously i still have to pay my daily rent clients or not !!! the salon is in a high street of a large busy village and i have done my homework and there doesn't seem to be anyone in the are that does enhancements ( mobile or salon )

panicking !

I think first of all you have to believe it will work...know that it will be a success and stay positive.

Don't think of failure at all....otherwise it will.

Have a great time and enjoy !!

sounds fab you have nothing to lose once word gets around you'll have loads of takers !! Good luck hun you'll be GREAT !!

hey bagpuss i can always rely on you for encouragement ! i think its the embarrassment of not doing anything I'm worried about, in a hair salon i was always busy !

Can you advertise on the shop window? Thats the best way, let the passing trade know you are there, Make sure it stands out and put the phone number up lots of peeps feel more comfortable booking an appointment over the phone, no idea why but its true:)
One thing though if the shops set up for debit cards make sure you take a deposit over the phone as well as face to face bookings, it really cuts down on the amount of no shows. As for how long, well its impossible to say, so much depends on your area, your skills, etc.
I do keep coming back to this but its the rule of thumb the tax office use.
1st year make a loss
2nd year maybe break even or a small loss or small profit
3rd year make a moderate profit.
Good luck with it and remember to stay excited:lol:

thanks all !x

I wouldn't be nervous I'd be mega excited.

If it is a busy and good hair salon with a good clientèle and if you do good work, then what are you worrying about??

What's to be embarrassed about not being busy when you first startup? Help out in the salon ... be part of the team ... network with the clients and AWAY YOU GO!!

right, positive, positive, positive !

this is exactly how i started out!!

i used to approach hair clients and say
" ive just had a cancellation, would you like a complimentary manicure or polish whilst your colour develops?"

or i would hang around and welcome hair clients and they would say to their stylists" whos that?"
i would then get my self involved in a chat , and it normally geared around" ohh id love my nails done, but have such bitten nails etc etc!
you have to make yourself available and on show, and friendly and approachable

good luck with it im sure youll be fine xxxx

Hi Lily,
I am in the boat, I rent a room above a hairdressers.
I started in November and have had nearly 80 clients in, and that was from scratch.

I have leaflets and posters in the hairdressers, my appointment book is kept with theirs and they take my appointments, so even when I'm not there the phone is answered.

I had an open evening to start the ball rolling, took 9 appointments that night.

I gave all the hairdressers a complimentary treatment so that they could get an understanding of what I did.

If I'm not doing appointments, I pop downstairs and talk to anyone. I have been known to sweep up for them occassionally and have made the odd cup of coffee.

Ill be in that boat soon, im planning to be there night and day, offering little treats to the clients., sweeping up, making tea and advertising myself and my room.

It will work ............ positive thoughts .....

Offer the hair salon clients a special offer (on a limited time period) to come to you.

 I too started in a salon 2 weeks ago and whats vary worried but things are slowly picking up and looking very promising. So be patient, keep busy and it will happen. Good luck

I am in Sc in columbia and I just finished school myself. I teach during the day and I am trying to get in a salon during the afternoon. I received an offer to work in a hair salon, but I am nervous. I don't feel like I have learned all that i need to know. I mostly only do my nails. I have only did a few of my cousin's nails. I know one of my issues is with the drill. I don't use the drill when I do nails, I do them with the hand file because I am still afraid of it... what do I do... doing it by hand takes a long time. I also am not good with the nail art. Where can I go and take classes. what should I do.. I study you tube and other nails sites... but I am still afraid...

hey Ive been nailing for quite a while and still wonder if i know enough ! in fact i had a lady in today for a full set of sculpts and i muffed them, she seemed pleased and the other girls liked them but i thought they were sh..e ! she had real bad nails to start with and very crooked fingers but i just couldn't get the sculp to look nice and smooth ( wished I'd tipped ) its playing on my mind terribly so i am going out for a couple of good large gins !
