So I have my first full male body wax tomorrow. I'm nervous for him! He has very long and thick hair. He is a first time waxee!

Any advice that might make things easier for either of us?

I was going to start from the feet up... What do you think?

Thanks everyone in advance!

Stacey,
I do lots of male full body waxes and the first few take a bit of time and its generally very hairy men that book in for these waxing treatments.

I prefer to do the trimming myself as clients can take it too short in certain areas.
If hes generally very hairy all over then its often easier to do all the body trimming at the beginning so you can clean up and get rid of all the loose hairs before you start waxing. I trim to about a grade 3 on most areas.

For my full body wax I start at the back ; legs, back and back of arms etc.. up on all fours for butt and then turn over and finish the intimate areas then chest and upper torso then legs and feet and finally I ask them to sit up so can finish the neck and any part of the shoulders I could not reach when he laying on the couch..

I offer a drink when we turn over and I ask them what type of music they like and just chat and make them feel comfortable. Its a long treatment so making your client relaxed and comfortable makes it so much easier for both of you..Also with so much time its a great opportunity to discuss aftercare in more detail.

Im sure it will be okay - Good luck Jack

Also what I forgot to add was that I always recommend full body waxers / first timers to take anti histmamine ; just the one a day variety - it really does help the skin to settle down much quicker and for areas like the chest the reaction can be stressful for clients especially when we are ripping out coarse hair!!.. I suggest they take it the day they wax and for 4/5 days later.
Jack

I wax from the feet up but there's no set way, just do it how you feel comfortable.
I do the front of the legs, chest, underarms and arms and then turn them over and do back of the legs and back and then get them to sit up and do their shoulders if needed.
I don't trim, never have. I cleanse, oil wax, oil again to get rid of any bits of wax and then apply refreshing gel and moisturing milk mixed together.
I ask them to bring fresh clean clothes to change into after their wax and then give them an aftercare leaflet when I've finished.
Just be methodical and I'm sure you will be perfectly fine. Let us know how you get on!

Hey guys,

Thanks for your advice, I read it just before I headed out the door so was fresh in my mind.

Still, things did not go so well :(

He was a good friend, not a paying customer. He offered to give me more experience. With him having such coarse hair - he was my Everest!

Started with nostril waxing (never hurts and figured it would relax him a little as he was very anxious). Went fantastically.

Then started on lower legs. I could NOT BELIEVE how hard it was to spread the wax with so much hair. I was concerned I didn't have the wax hot enough, but after turning it up a little he said it was too hot - on the point of unbearable. Is this normal? I was using Berins ease and plastic spatula.

The hair came off pretty clean for the most part. But I would have to say, I would feel uncomfortable sending a paying customer away with how his legs looked at the end. A few broken or stubborn hairs left behind. I felt uncomfortable going over the skin again as he said it hurt quiet a bit towards the end. What do you do to prevent this happening??? Is it normal or my technique?

Unfortunately I left my clippers at home (I live 3 hours from his place), so couldn't tidy up intimate region first. We only got half way done :( He said it hurt too much, and he kept flinching and pulling his knees up and rolling around. It didn't help that he kept smooshing the hot wax through the hairs when he would do this :( Or that his brother was filming! Do many clients act this way? Everyone else I've done has had more sparse hair, but his reaction was very deflating :(

Weirdly, he was very impressed with how his crack wax turned out ! lol

I spoke to him today, and he said he HAS had his arms and back waxed before (ten years ago - I thought it was his first wax) and that he broke out then. He was pleasantly surprised that he hadn't so far, but he had not received any after care advice back then.

Long story short, he needed a break after that much, and couldn't bring himself to finish the job. I have to admit I'm pretty deflated, as I honestly struggled. It took TWO HOURS to do nostril, legs crack and half a crotch! So much for speed waxing LOL

Any advice as to where I may have went wrong and any differences I should expect with someone with such coarse hair (if any) would be appreciated?

Thanks so much for your support ... after an experience like that you really appreciate all of the people helping newbies like me on SG.

Hi Stacey
Don't be deflated you set yourself a right task doing your first male a FULL body wax. Try and get him to let you have another go maybe just on his back when he can bear it again, and don't forget your clippers! Take your time and practise just like you will have done with your first female customers. Build up your areas gradually untill you feel confident doing a paying customer.
I only offered male backs waxes for ages when I first started and gradually the demand came for more areas so i built up as I got more experience.
Don't worry just keep practising

When using Berins Ease with a spatula you need to make sure your spatula is at a 90 degree angle when spreading the wax. It's probably a good wax to use when you're a bit nervous as it doesn't dry on the skin so gives you more time. It does need to go on as thin as you can get it though and there can be a tendency to put it on too thick so keep the spatula at 90 degrees and spread it like butter!
If you're not that confident at waxing then maybe next time you could ask him to clipper his hairs beforehand (saves getting hairs all over the place when you're waxing!)
2 hours is really not that bad and you will get quicker with practice. I use roller wax on legs as I just find it quicker for me.
His nostril waxing and crack wax went well so it's not all bad.
Did you use some oil under the wax?
I would probably wait until you are more confident before doing the intimate waxing again.
2 of the 4 areas you did were good so you're half way there!

It sounds like you did fine for your first go with him. He sounds like he was difficult to wax anyway so don't beat yourself up over it. After you've waxed him a few times it'll be easier for him and you. Just remember to take your clippers next time and it might make it easier to spread the wax if the hair is a little shorter. You could also suggest he takes a couple of nurofen or similar before hand to help with the pain a bit - I know a few people who do it when getting their brazilian done and it seems to help them.

Well done you, I remember my first one (solo) and he was very hairy, it's very daunting. I was on the phone to Andy (Axiom) almost until I walked in the clients front door I was so nervous! This chap was going into hospital for a hip replacement and wanted it for hygiene reasons. I did brows, ears, nostrils, back, full brazilian in two hours fifteen and it was bloody hard work. Luckily, being an extreme sportsman he's broken more bones than I have fingers so his pain threshold was very high. It must have been so tricky with your chap moving and flinching so well done for getting as much done as you did!

I would ditch the plastic spatula (assuming its the berins one). I don't like them because they are curved on both sides, and as Angelina says the key is getting the wax on at the right angle. The curve means the wax can't go on as easily as I would like - you get thicker areas, and of course the time will come where we won't be allowed to double dip. Get into the habit of chucking after each dip in the pot - keeps you and your pot cleaner too.

I'd send him a card, say thanks for being a model, hope he wasn't put off and ask him to call you when he's ready for another go.

I can't believe no-one has asked WTF was someone filming it?????

How did I miss this thread!

Ok, so now you've done it but here's my advice to you.

Always wax strangers rather than friends as they moan like hell, whereas strangers don't.

Never charge a model/volunteer as they're doing you a favour.

Be methodical:-
I start with my clients laying flat on their front and start from the ankles and work my way upwards. Do the sides of the buttocks with them laying down, but once you've finished the backs of the legs and the back, get your client on all fours to finish the buttocks and the butt crack.

Turn your client over onto their back and start waxing from the ankles upwards. I apply wax (to several different parts of the body………a bit like spinning plates………but as this is new to you, have a system and stick to it (no pun intended). Legs, then chest and stomach and finish with the intimate.

Do the arms and facial hair. Then sit your client on the side of the bed and finish and check the shoulders.

This is only to give you an idea to get you started.as once you become expert, you'll have the wax in the nostrils, brows, ears, and on the chest/stomach all at the same time whilst you're waxing the Brazilian.

If you want to get your speeds up, have a day of half body waxes and work on your timings.

You'll get there and although it might seem daunting now, you'll get it soon enough. xx

Hi Stacey

I know you didn't have your clippers but they way you have described your difficulty in applying wax to the legs, I would say the hair was definitely too long. Now, we have to work with what we've got, and I would have gone ahead and waxed without clippering too, but the plastic spatula probably wasn't the most ideal tool in this situation, for two reasons. One is that you're quite new to using it, so best to practice with it on larger, flatter areas and two, mens legs tend to be more contoured than girls, so with a smaller spatula you would have found it easier to work around the muscles and bone. In addition, with the hair being so dense, I think you would have been able to be firmer and therefore apply more thinly, with a disposable spatula.

You say he was your 'Everest' and I know exactly what you mean, but I can tell you that he won't be your only one! The next one might be next week or in 5 years time but I am sure that you will find yourself faced with a similar proposition, especially given that you are going to specialise in male waxing.

With regard to the intimate area, it might be a good idea to try to keep your waxing symmetrical, at least on first-timers, so that if they feel the need to give up part way through, they don't go away looking so silly:D However, it is very rare for someone to give up part way through. Very rare.

You could have trimmed the intimate hair with a small pair of scissors. If you take hold of a clump of hair and twist it and snip it off, that works quite well, and it's not too messy as you end up with the hair between your thumb and fingers so can easily drop it in the bin. It's a relatively quick way to trim an area. (Although I wouldn't have done this on the legs, only the intimate area.)

This particular guy also may have a very low pain threshold. I know exactly what you mean about his reaction, but really, it is the minority of clients who struggle so much with it.

One last thing I would like to add, and that is that sometimes it can be quicker to be steady and calm. The tortoise and the hare. Speed waxing is all very well in perfect conditions, but when faced with a challenge, slow and steady wins the race.

Thanks for taking the time everyone, the advice is fantastic. All the little hints and tips I wouldn't work out for myself for a few years (knowning me) are invaluable.

I have subscribed and printed this page as I know I will refer back to it.

Thanks again xxx
