I’ve got my first two mobile clients booked in, a lady and her elderly mother both for a cut and blow. How do other mobile hairdressers do this? Obviously in the salon we would take them over to the basin, but this will be at their home, so do I wash their over their bath or just wet their hair down with a spray bottle? I don’t know how old the ladies mother is but I believe she is elderly and I don’t know whether having her bent over is an option or not

I have found each person varies with their preferred way,a couple like to shampoo before I arrive and I spray down, some will lean over the bath and we'll use the shower hose, some will lean over a sink and either use a hose attached to the taps or a jug and some ladies like to lean back so I use a mobile basin next to the bath using a producers chair from Habitat (the back is on hinges so it leans back.) If you do colours then I would invest in a back basin as sometimes for rinsing balayage and applying a toner or the odd occasion when highlights take quicker than expected and need to be rinsed off at the back before the front is ready, then it makes life easier and safer.

I used to ask clients to shampoo their hair just prior to my arrival and leave it wrapped in a towel. I could spray it down during the cut, if needed.

Thanks both for your recommendations. I’ve told them I’ll message them to confirm they’re still ok for the appt the day before, so will ask them then whether they want to wash their hair prior to me arriving or if they want me to wash it there and tackle it that way

I will say over a sink with a jug saves your back over the years!
or if possible (especially since covid) ask them to wash it before you come, try not to compare it to a salon, they will feel comfortable enough in their own home in my experience.

I'm sure you will find this out when you arrive at their house. It is always a good idea to ask questions when they book appt. I have washed hair over a sink,/bath a bowl on their lap or even in bed with a blow up basin. You have to be prepared to be adaptable. It is a bit daunting your first job but I'm sure you will get used to it & find it less nerve wracking as time goes on. Good luck.

Thank you, yes I think because it’s my first real mobile clients (not family) that I’m finding it daunting and worried about asking what they’d prefer in case they just expect a certain service, but hopefully I’ll establish before I go how they want to wash it and all will go fine and it will boost my confidence

over my time, some like it sprayed down some like it shampooed and it is a backbreaker if you have to use a hose over the bath one of my clients has (can’t think of the name but dizziness )when you put her head back or forward so she has to sit bolt upright while I wash the hair which is a nightmare I bought this thing from America that goes round the head almost like one of those baby halo things everybody is different good like you will be fine x

I decided to invest in a portable backwash basin. It is bulky and I have a bucket to collect the water. It was one of the BEST pieces of equipment I invested in. I specialise in housebound/disabled clients, and they love it because I can move them to a chair in the middle of a room (living room for some) and then do the whole service from there, with me just moving everthing around them (bowl and jug for water in case you were wondering). Just about everything is possible like that. It depends on what kind of work makes up the majority of your round, but for me it's great and I've had so many good comments as a result ☺
