I have a client who has an allergy to formaldehyde resin, which is different to the formaldehyde that has been removed from lots of ranges. She currently brings her own chanel base, colour and top coat but as she is a regular client I would like to get a set of my own, but something a bit more affordable than the chanel! I use sparitual and o.p.i at the moment but both ranges have items in with formaldehyde resin. Does anyone know of a base and top coat that doesn't have it.

Formaledhyde resin is also known as epoxy resin or tosylamide.

Thank you!

I don't know for sure but I thought spa ritual wear 3 free?
I know that CND color effects are 3 free, I'm not sure about the ingredient you mentioned though best to call them and ask ,

I thought that too, have just had another look and it does mention the resin..

Q: What is formaldehyde and does it exist in SpaRitual products?
A: Formaldehyde is a form preservative that allows lacquer to properly adhere to the nail. Formaldehyde is also prevalent, often at much larger levels, in soft drinks, carpeting, paints and permanent press fabrics. SpaRitual does not use formaldehyde in our nail lacquers and treatments, but instead uses tosylamide/formaldehyde resin which is synthesized with 0.3% formaldehyde. This finished resin is washed thoroughly to eliminate any residual formaldehyde, and technically carries only trace amounts of formaldehyde

I wonder if Zoya has the same. off to re-check that one too..

I'm violently allergic to TFR (Tosylamide Formaldehye Resin) too, and can assure you that CND's current (colour and effects) range is completely OK. No TFR in it at all, although if you buy form a distributor such as Ellisons let them know you want the new stuff as only 2 months ago they sent me a Super Shiney - old formulation, and that doed/did contain it.

Other ranges that I know are Ok are Zoya, Nubar, Bio Sculpture (all except the clear top coat - the others are all fine) and Jessica. I thought OPI were now too, and the colours defintely are, but I can't swear for the top coats.

A client with a severe allergy to formaldehyde is very unfortunate indeed... (most likely from repeated overexposure, such as formaldehyde containing hardeners)

To quote from Doug Schoons 'nail structure and product chemistry, edition 2'

"The only way to eliminate this tiny residual of formaldehyde from nail polish is to use an inferior copolymer. Hypoallergenic polishes usually replace TAF resin with a polyester resin. This makes the polish about 10-20 percent less durable. Put another way, superior nail polish formulations containing TAF copolymer have almost no detectable amounts of formaldehyde. The only reason for using the inferior resin is so that marketers can make the "no formaldehyde" claim. Because they are less durable, these products offer little benefit for the user. The only exception is the occasional client who is allergic to formaldehyde. Allergic clients have no choice but to use the inferior formaldehyde free nail polish"

So your off to find a weaker 'formaldehyde free' formula, just for this client...
Personally if she has them herself, I'd continue to let her bring them...

There is such a mish-mash of info on this thread! I'd love to answer in a scientific way but there is too much to answer!

Formaldehyde is a GAS. I can't imagine what formaldehyde resin the original client is allergic to that is different from what has been removed???? The 'epoxy' version is an alternative to the TAF that has been removed!? Tosylamide is part of TAF (tosylamide/formaldehyde resin) but different from the 'epoxy' version.

I'm not sure that Chanel polishes have removed the resin but most of the polishes on the market have!

How does the client know the specifics of the allergy???

Thanks for all your replies. I will ring sweet squared later. Maybe it's safer to stick with what she knows works! It has been interesting researching it though.
