it took a few days to show.
but you need to get it linked to places etc for your site to show up in searches otherwise it just shows when peopl type in your site.

my website shows up alot on google and im with webs but it takes time.

Hi thanks for your reply, im new a this :(

How do I submit it to Google? As the site was set up a while ago? How do I link it to places?

Sorry for being naive :(

Thanks

if you type in submit my site in the google search bar it will bring you to the page.
you can add your site to directories..

brownbook etc if you do a search on here it will bring a few places you can advertise which get googled

not really an expert but the most places you put your site the better googled you are in theory

It also helps to get your website listed on as many free index sites as possible - e.g. FreeIndex, HotFrog, Thomson Local, etc. However, I wouldn't recommend paying out for a listing on any sites - your money is normally better spent elsewhere.

Thanks everyone for your great ideas!!

I just need to sort out the site now :(

Hi all.

In my previous life at a web agency, I wrote a book about basic search engine optimisation. It seems quite a few people here are creating their own websites are are keen to improve their search engine ranking so here is a link to the SEO book (it's a free download).

I hope you enjoy and get value from it. BTW although my website says I offer SEO services, I don't... sorry.

The book should give you enough information to help you improve your search engine rankings.

I tried to write in simplistic terms to cover the things that you can control and have the most affect with. These basics are often overlooked by even the largest companies.

Also, at my last company they created a great SEO tool on their website that lets you see which words your website page contains and how a search engine may see it.

I use this tool on my pages to optimise the text... it can be quite enlightening.

Hope you find the book and tool useful.

Great resource Craig! Thanks a lot, really helpful! :)

Interesting tool!

One question though - does it expect "meta" tags to be named "META" (in capitals) rather than "meta" (in lower case). As I put a site through it (that has "meta" in lower case) and it said it couldn't find the keywords! And for valid XHTML, I'm pretty sure you need the "meta" in lower case...

Hi Ruth, it can't see the meta data as in the source code, the keywords and description are on a separate line with a carriage return in. Eg.

<meta name="keywords" content=
"Body Paint Model, Body Painting Model, Body Art Model,...I've had this before with it. If you pull it all on the same line, it reads it but the tool looks for the quote mark directly after content=

Hope this helps. Glad you like the tool.
