I have searched on this and it is well over a year since it was discussed - so here goes is the French manicure outdated? do you still think it is classic looking or do you prefer natural or fantasticly polished nails?

Furthermore - what do you think about French manicures on toes?

A blog discussed this way back last year and it got over 90 replies - some agreeing with tacky and some saying classic - so folks what do you think now a year on?

Worst Beauty Trend of the Moment: French Pedicures

BTW I prefer natural looking nails BUT think that a nice short French manicure can look lovely on a bride :green:

If you sport glamour length nails, french manicure SCREAMs porno flick... to me anyway.

A nice custom blended french with natural looking smiles I'm down for that (traditional stand by, my students deem it boring- suitable but boring)

Glitter tips, art, sparkles or gems- fun!! Wearable for summer, when I don't have to be "business like"

I have to say that if done right french is classic..not too long etc and it is fine. really long or bright white nah ah not for me..:rolleyes:i have only ever had french on my nails, but now i have them not even to the end of my finger tip and coloured, no french!
on toes..? love it! looks fresh and pretty and clean. i have my toes usually french gel.
cant wait to see what others think of this too..

I love the french look, especially if carried out properly.I prefer a subtle white not too in your face and nice length nails.I'm talking manicure here not enhancements but I like enhancements in pink and white as well.

Toes look gorgeous, clean looking, but they have to have a good free edge or they look naff.I had my toes overlaid a couple of years in pink and white and they were stunning, lasted ages as well.I loved them, just hated getting the damned stuff off as hard to bend down...Gettin old me dears:green:

Long square nails in french do scream 'porno' to me too lol, but on a nice length you cant beat a french polish!!! Deffo a classic for me! x

I'm tired of the classic pink/ white French look myself.....I understand if it's a bride.....but if you snazz it up with some colours maybe some cloured tips....on toes a nice polish .....then your talking my language!

Hi , the main reason I like pink and white classic French manicures is they always look clean ,
and if they're not too long look classy too, x

.

Hmm well if its the ridiculous Stacy Slater style then I have to say its a definite no no for me but kept at a decent respectable/manageable length, professionally done, it can look very fetching.

I get what you mean, its the predictable option, one thats really popular but I personally prefer the more glitzy designs.

If you look in my gallery you will see that I thought "porn star" french was what a good enhancement meant.. Infact i may have been one of the largest distributors of porn star nails in my town!! since then i have come to love a classic line.. I love french.. but less is more for me now when it comes to french.. On the other hand.. glitters and colours.. well the funkier the better!

Toes.. well thats different.. I love a nice french toe.. its just clean and fresh!

didn't vote sorry!!!

couldn't decide between natural look and polish?

Hate p&w now, used to love it when i first started, but now sooo false looking!!! nothing beats a natural looking nail.

love the lastest chrome polishes, this season my favourite, very glam!!!!

so natural or in season polish, either good for me, but NO french polish/pw.

personal though, what the client wants, the client gets!!

Great thread xxxx

I like the short classic french when using stark whites, soft white or custom blended natural look.
But funky french done with colours and glitters is a different matter entirely.

Funny this should come up as i have recently " gone off" the french mani look and all it's variations  Dunno why ?

Atm i am wearing long black enhancements with a few diamontes for a bit of bling  soooo not like me

When I first started in nails I HATED french nails and square nails and together - well what can I say

I do wear french gel toes myself now and occasionally on my fingers but I much prefer long polished nails. I just find polish difficult to work in.

I put ok for some occasions. I just hate doing French on someone who has wide and short nail plates, they just make the nails look stubbier and wider. I think if someone has the opposite and keeps the free edge short then it really does look classic. I'm not a fan of custom blend either .. not sure if that makes me a heretic, but at least I'm honest!! However for me I really prefer the natural look, even if I've worn French I've got bored of it within days and changed back to natural or polish.

However I really love French on feet, it really pretties up one of the most hideous parts of the body!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think if done properly, right lencth, not too bright white etc its a classic look, I hate to see thew really square french nails with loads of white tip though! And I love french on toes.:)

I voted ok for some ocasions, but you know which look I hate the most - the look that has to be created for P&W competition nails. In the real world they look absolutely awful!

It all depends on who does it, who wears it and HOW they wear it.

A wonky french is awful, ive seen some pretty bad DIY french polishes. Id rather have bare nails than a crap paint job.

If your a porn star / lap dancer / jodie marsh *lol* then it will probably look tacky, wether the nails are tacky themselves or not, its just the overall general look that people will see. (i like jodie marsh btw lol)

Short elegant nails look lovely with a nice french polish, it goes with everything. Looks good on brides, business types, moms, daughters, i've even done an american polish on a guy. I pretty much refuse to put a french polish on long nails, as it will look awful, and thats not the kind of work i want to put my name to!! I can usually talk the odd client out of it anyway!

overall french is great for fingers and toes!!!

OK for some occasions was my answer.

Once upon a time, when pink and whites were special and not too many people were wearing them, they were really something beautiful and quite out of the ordinary.

Now that almost everyone is wearing them however, my opinion has changed. Don't get me wrong, I do still like the "french" look, but I much prefer my nails to look different to everyone elses that's all.

I think on short natural nails french polish looks fab and very classy but not when its a huge thick white tip on enhancements. In fact it put me right off french altogether then more people have started going natural again (short nails) and im converted again.

Im not keen on toes having french polish, I either see people with REALLY long toenails so that they can show off the white or they have short nails with half the nail painted white, looks awful !! If its a very fine line then I think its ok.
