Hey, distinguished few,

I'm in a sort of dilemma here. I started college back in August doing HND Beauty Therapy but the atmosphere and the cost (I'm needing to pay my own fees since I used up my SAAS funding on my degree) is becoming a bit much. I would really like to join the beauty team with one of the cruise liner companies and I've been told that what I've learned in my first year - facials, face and body electrotherapy, depilation, hand and foot therapies, body massage - plus some industry experience would be enough. I would obviously turn my qualification into an HNC instead... would this be enough to even apply for salon jobs in Glasgow to get the experience I need?

I know it's a very competitive job market for those fresh out of college and wanting to gain experience and some advice here would be much appreciated.

Am I correct in assuming that HNC/HND are nationally recognized qualifications and not internationally recognized qualifications? To work on cruise liners, I think you need an internationally recognized qualification.

I only say this because, yes, it is very competetive and I've been led to believe that sought after cruise jobs are given priority to therapists with internationally recognized certificates, although I may stand to correction on this.

However, best wishes and hope you find your answer. x

OK, now you have me worried....

Thanks Weezie :) By the sounds of things I'll need to stick it out for the 2 years. Oh well.

Nevermind now.....

Seems none of my potential cruise ship employers would take me on even if I had all the qualifications in the world: None of them appear to like people with epilepsy

Back to the drawing board, then.

Were you allowed to carry out electrical treatments at college?

i am fully qualified to HND level as well it is the scottish qualification no differnt to any other colleges and it is fully recognised to the same level as other therapists in England etc. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the HND is a BTEC qualification awarded by Edexcel and in Scotland is a Higher National awarded by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

The attainment level is roughly equivalent to second year of university, a Diploma of Higher Education but in some cases may be marginally below that of a bachelor's degree. An HND takes two years of full-time study, or one year full-time following successful completion of a Higher National Certificate.
In Scotland an HND is Level 8 on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework and in England, Wales and Northern Ireland it is Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework
.
the cruise liners will recognise it also as my friend works for them but i would finish your HND and try stick it out you only have till end of may would have been a waste to throw it away nowto be honest xx
