I'm quite new to the beauty side of this industry so am not up on all the treatments available

I have recently started spray tanning and to date have advised potential clients to exfoliate etc before coming for their spray tan, which is fine. However, I have just had an enquiry wanting me to give an exfoliation prior to the spray tan, rather than them doing it at home. How does this work? What products would you use? Would you ask them to shower afterwards? Wouldn't any product inadvertenty left affect the solution? If so, wouldn't it have to be done the day before a spray tan was applied? What training is available?
Many thanks
PS - I'm and experienced massage therapist (sports, acupressure, remedial, deep tissue, aromatherpist etc), but no beauty qualifications other than spray tanning.

Me and my friend spoke to Fake bake at Gmex who said that they offer training for their manual tanning at a cost of £50, this includes the exfolation before hand. They said that this is better done where the client can shower afterwards but the lady did say that it wouldnt be impossibe to remove the exfoliant afterwards with warm cloths.

Sorry that might not be of much help!

Yikes! I've never had a client ASK ME to exfoliate for them. No shower at my place so I'd decline.

Oh my days, in all my years of spray tanning i have NEVER had anyone ask me to exfoliate THEM!!!!.............. what solutions and products do you use?????.............. We (sienna - x) provide sachets of pre tan scrub ( Rough it up to smooth it off!) which you can either give or retail to your clients and they can do it themselves b4 hand or we do a pre tan prep spritz which you can do for them.

Explain to the client that you dont have the facilities to provide an exfoliation service (ie having a stranger in your own shower!)

Gosh, it only take 2 minutes to scrub yourself in the shower.

Give me a call 07919 890577 and i may be of help with regards to pre tan products.

I think that a package of being exfoliated and then being spray tanned would work really well. (not a spray tanner though, so would have to work on a suitable medium).

I use a udwarthanam ayurvedic dry powder to do a full exfoliation. As it is a dry powder, it doesn't leave any granules or oil or creamy residue. You need no showering as you polish the powder off the skin, then buff it off with a rolled up towel at the end.

The twice I have had a spray tan, I have done this to myself the day before.

I was thinking of offering this as a package with my spray tan too, getting them to come the day before. I have a shower cubicle anyway as that is where i do my spray tan so would not be a problem. But i need to find out if i need to do some training before i could offer it.

You definitely don't need a shower to offer full body exfoliation. I get the client to undress as for a massage and lie on the couch, cover them up and only expose the body part you are actually working on, ie leg or arm. Any brand of body exfoliant will do or even a facial range one, they all do the same thing!

Wet your hands, apply the scrub, rub hands together and then with fast upward strokes apply to the client. Keep it fast and light. Then, with a bowl of hot water under/beside the couch just wring out a mitt or small towel and remove, again keep it fast.

Cover them up and move onto the next part.

I can do a full exfoliation in about 15 mins, book out 30 though. So it doesn't take long, low product cost and I charge £15.

Thanks all for your replies.

The client in question actually asked at the salon where I do spray tanning (so not a mobile client), and they do have a shower there, so it would be possible to exfoliate with a product and then get them to shower afterwards. The salon has a shower - in fact, like you Sassy, it is where I do the spray tanning.

TBH - it doesn't bother me doing it... I've seen and touched enough bodies in fifteen years of massage, but I'm more concerned about the effects of doing it immediately before a spray tan.

Any product would have to be thoroughly removed. Don't you need to apply a moisturiser after exfoliation? but applying moisturiser before a spray tan will prevent the solution from being absorbed.
Also, I understand it's not ideal to have had a shower just before a spray tan.

I didn't speak to the client personally as they phoned the salon, but I wonder if they are used to being exfoliated as you would with the St Tropez manual tan, and this is why she is expecting to be exfoliated beforehand......perhaps she is confusing the two.

Thinking about it, it may be worth offering, but if so, should I only offer it the day before a spray tan?

I use St Tropez cream tan (not spray) and always exfoliate them before hand, but I also use full-body exfoliations before many other treatments. It's easy to do without a shower, all you need is a bowl, some large sponges or towelling mitts.

I'm sure my sister had a body exfoliation before her manual fake bake as part of the treatment!

I do this in my salon too, no shower and so easy to sponge it off.

We mostly do it as part of the St Tropez Classic Cream tan but also offer it as a separate services. For example we do a full body exfoliation and rehydration treatment (exfoliant and moisturising lotion) and a full body exfoliation (which can be done as a treatment in itself or before another treatment such as a spray tan). I find this to be very popular before the spray tanning especially with people who come straight from work, or people that forget to do it that morning!

The problem with this though is that won't you have just applied moisturiser which will prevent the spray tan from taking... I understand it's part of a manual tan, but clients shouldn't use moisturiser, deoderant or perfumes on the day of a spray tan, which is why I'm thinking that it should really only be offered the day before having a spray tan.

Edited to add:
Sorry tansandhands... I think I may have misread your post... so if spray tanning, you do the full body exfoliation, but don't use moisturiser if they're having a spray tan afterwards? If so, would you then ask them to shower to get any remnants of the exfoliation off? and what product do you use to exfoliate?

For those clients who book in for a lotion application tan I always include a full exfoliation so as to get the best results moisturising only the dry areas prior to tanning, knees, elbows, feet etc. I do not need a shower for this and most tanning companies offer exfoliators and moisturisers to compliment the treatment. Spray tanning clients I find rather fly in and fly out so I advise exfoliation prior to the appointment day.

That's right. If they are having a spray tan straight after we generally don't apply a moisturiser as that may act as a barrier to the solution, but on some occasions I may apply a light moisturiser to any dry patches such as elbows, knees etc.

We don't have a shower in our salon so we just sponge the exfoliant off afterwards.

We use the St Tropez Step 2 Body Polishers. But you can use any sort of professional exfoliant from your local wholesalers. I know Skintruth do a good one

The majority of our spray tan clients do aswell. But I always think it's a good idea to have the option there of a professional exfoliation, it is also maybe something else you can offer that your competitors currently don't or haven't thought of. If the client hasn't had time to prepare properly, by doing this you will be improving the end result of the tan xx
