Hi Geeks

I have a double garage which is only used for storage, we park our cars on the drive. I intend to use my spare room in the house to start with but want to convert one side of my garage next year into a salon. Can I ask the geeks on here who have done a garage conversion, did you have to put in a toilet? Did you do the coversion yourself(friend/hubby) or did you get the builders in? Any other information/help would be very much appreciated. Thanks Niki :)

Hi there - I did put a toilet in as it saves clients going through my house if they need to use it. I did not think it fair on them and my family! If you do not have one close by then I would recommend it. We got the builders in and it did cost quite a bit but it also puts value on the house. HTH:)

Thanks for that.

Did it cost less or more than £6000? Sorry, you don't have to answer that if its too personal a question. It will just give me a rough idea. :)

I (well my hubbie) have converted just over half of my single garage (see my album) as I was not sure how much it would enhance my then mobile business. I have a downstairs loo very close to my studio so did not see the need nor would I of had the room, only thing I do wish is that I had put in a small hand basin for water access and also keep running out of studio to wash my hands, so I would say this is a must, apart from that I am very happy with mine and at the moment it serves me well, I do waxing, Nails, Pedi`s & Spray Tanning. I am however looking to taking the full garage into the conversion with a seperate access door to the side of the house & a wash Basin but in about 2 years time. HTH.

Thank you.

I really like your studio. :)

Mine is a detached garage so water was a must as I can't keep legging it back & forth to the house. I don't have a toilet yet as I've not needed one much but I will add one when I complete phase 3 of the conversion (just finished phase 2). I am doing it in bits as it is expensive and I don't want to borrow any money.

All I will say (which I learnt the hard way and cost me loads) is make sure that you insulate very well. Garages do not often have cavity walls nor is the floor often insulated. I have lined my entire building with 100mm celletex which is very expensive but very worth it. My first room was not very well insulated to begin with so our electric bills were around £600 per quater to keep the place heated. I had to strip out the entire room after 1 year then re-do it (very expensive coving which made me cry having to take it all down & replace it!)

I have some pic's on my profile which I am about to update with pics of the next phase. There is no reason why a home salon cannot look just as professional as a high street salon!

It is the best thing I have ever done so go for it!

Your conversion looks great and I love the coving. I am taking notes of all your comments so that I dont miss anything out when it comes to the build. Thank you. :)
