Hey,
Its been a while since ive dug out my gel nail kit, so i decided to have a practise tonight. My question is why did my nail beds feel like they were burning after i put them under the lamp???
I prepped as usual, applied a thin layer of builder blush, (im using NSI)cured for 60 seconds, took them out and applied the builder blush again to build the apex and when they went back under the lamp they were 'burning', i had to take them out and jiggle them around a bit before putting them back in!
What was the cause of this and how can i avoid it in the future??:irked:
Would be grateful for any suggestions...
Thanks...xXx

I was told that heat spike is where all the little molecules in the gell are moving around creating friction while they are curing. It is usually when the gel is on too thick or the nail plates are thin and sensitive bringing the hand out of the lamp and tapping stops the molecules Jiggling about so much and stops it burning.Hope its all true as thats what i was told.

Ah, thank you, i think in that case it could be a combination of the two! Ill have to practice on some more people and see whether the same thing happens and if so ill try the tapping method!!
Thanks again xXx

I think you were applying too thick a layer in one go, try more thinner layers. If this happens with clients it can put them off, it is much better to try and eradicate the problem. HTH

Tapping your fingers does NOT slow down the chemical reaction that is causing the heat spike you were given incorrect information on that .... Tapping your fingers just gives you something else to focus on to stop the heat being unbearable!!

For years I never used gels because I did not believe that a nail service should involve pain of any kind. I still believe that.

There are better quality gels that do not have the tremendous heat spike you experienced ... one of them is Brisa Gel from CND. a client would only feel heat from a normal gel application with Brisa if her nails were thin and/or damaged.

Ok, thank you, i must admit i'm far from confident with nails anyway so there is no way i'm ready to sell the service again and i will practice using thinner layers this time.
As for trying a different gel, I have just got a membership number from CND as i'm getting the manicure and pedicure range and was considering converting to their l&p and gel so i'm hoping to get a conversion course booked. (incidentally when i trained in nail enhancements, we were never taught anything about a 'heat spike' - i've never heard of it before! - that's why i was so shocked when i felt it)
Thanks for all your help...xXx

you might try adjusting the amount of gel you're applying and (completely!) curing during each layer. i use nsi gels on a regular basis and NEVER experience heat spikes, so it is NOT the product. its a great system and is not low quality by any means. if the problem is overly thinned nailplate then i believe you'll feel a heat spike with any gel system until you have new, undamaged regrowth. in that case the root of your problem is in your prep.

Thanks for the replies i will bear them all in mind, as i say i haven't done gels for eons now so im still at the re-practising stage, (think it'll be a while before i crack it again!!)
many thanks anyway...xXx

You mentioned that you felt the heat spike after you applied the second layer of Builder, so I'm assuming you didn't feel it on the first layer (am I wrong?). That is probably telling you that the second layer was just too thick. As the others have advised, try a thinner layer and you should see a difference.

That's right it was fine on the first layer, and i must admit that i applied a thicker layer than i normally do, in fact looking at them now they're not far off resembling shovels!!
Think i'll file off and try again, thanks for that xXx
